Any one had any thing to do with flying in Indonesia?...Are my aussie quals recognised over there? do I have to get an Indonesian license to fly over there...what is involved in getting one? (I really hope its not the same as the bloody fines one gets for being a non asian and driving over there)
what is the ATC like over there....or is there one?
do you have to be fluent in Indonesian to fly over there?, or will english (or ozzie) cover it?
any and all help appreciated.

I have a plan that might involve a bit of commercial flying over there.....hence the questions. I havnt had much luck with the embassy over here (they wont answer the phone) so this might be the next best thing.
still would like some info........anyone.

I was thinking about jolly's around the coast and other tame VFR stuff.
I can speak limited Indo but certainly enough to get by with the refuelers.......gosh thats how I learned my limited Indo.....by bargaining with the locals. :D

Dear Friend,

You don't have to have an Indonesian's CPL?ATPL in order to fly commercially in Indonesia. Your OZ's licence is good enough. All you have to do is get a company in Indonesia to sponsor your employment, submit an application to INA CAA for licence validation and sit for the local airlaw papers. You will be given the 'Certificate of Validation' and it remains valid as long as your medical is valid and you are working with the same company throughout.

Hope the above info will help. It applies to all ICAO contracting states in accordance with Chicago Convention (forgot the year).

cheers hushkit, I was hopeing to start a small company myself, can I sponser myself into Indonesia?....probably not, but your post is a starting point for me, thanx.
I am having a bugga of a time getting any information from the Indonesians.

there are some airlines opening positions soon. 732/4 and MD82 and A313s. For VFRs and charters, there are open positions but looking for them is difficult. Working here on a local basis is possible, if you don't mind the local pay!

A new TriStar operator will appear next year...pax and cargo. Training provided as long as the bond is signed. Details as they become available.

MD82 and A313? You should contact LionAir (JT) or Regionair (the lessors)...

For 732 jobs, there's a pool of 732 pilots here so forget that one. 727s can go to Air Smith for a post in Jatayu Air.

Wiz, I haven't worked in Indonesia - have flown there plenty of times - but know many Aussies who have. Yes, your Aussie licence is recognised, and as is the case with Malaysia and Singapore a pass in Air Law (which doesn't require much study) will give you a local licence based on a validation of your Aussie one.
Bahasa Indonesia isn't required, but a little will help make YOUR life easier.

Having lived and worked in S.E. Asia for the past 12 years (Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Cambodia) please allow me to offer you an insight.
Forget about setting up your own company! To do that you'll HAVE to have an Indonesian partner, and don't they just love to fleece the bulehs of as much money as possible, before telling you that in spite of jumping through endless hoops, and spending bucketloads of money, you look like being unsuccessful...although another "donation" of $10,000 will probably see you get it!
Money is EVERYTHING in Indonesia, and if you have white skin you are a bottomless well of the stuff, as far as the locals are concerned!

Even the Government workers expect a kickback for givng you ANY assistance, but you'll need to pick your mark - if you start giving handouts too far down the food chain, you'll end up forking out to hundreds of menials with no results.
You either have to get an Indonesian partner, and let him do the work (expect to get fleeced), or demand to see none other than the head of the Indonesian DCA. Have plenty of USD's handy - and I'm talking 50's and 100's at the upper levels! (expect to get fleeced).

BORAQ, and GARUDA used to employ expat F/O's, mainly on their 737's - the money was lousy, but most - if not all - of the guys who were there 6-7 years ago have commands or damned good jobs with other airlines, because of the (jet) experience they gained. There are stories circulating that more than one pilot who hadn't previously held an ATPL anywhere, paid a $2,000 USD once only (which is UNusual) "fee" (read bribe) to be issued with a full Indonesian ATP.

Forget about 411A's DREAM - it ain't gunna happen! He's a sad, bitter, old man - but don't take my word for it, read more of his posts on the Fragrant Harbour forum.

you seem to be the man when it comes to flying in SE Asia !
I'm from Germany, hold FAA ATP, 1800TT, 200ME.
Can you give me any leads about jobs down there ?

I'm not really looking for the heavy iron, small to medium sized turbine twins in charter or airline ops would do.

Any suggestions ?

Good onya Kaptn M, that was quite informative and as far as my experiance with the Indonesians so far has indicated, quite close to being the whole damn truth.. .I would still like to have a bash at it though........gives me an excuse to go to Bali lots. :) <img src="wink.gif" border="0"> . .I am fully expecting to get fleeced and would be quite prepared for the partner if he/she tries it on, but if I can cover all the bills and make a wage I would be happy enough. Failing getting the business going I would be quiet happy driving someone elses bird.......just gotta get up there.. . <img src="tongue.gif" border="0"> :) <img src="smile.gif" border="0">

Being a local (who has also been fleeced/conned and whatever else), believe what Kaptin M said.

However, not everyone down here is looking to fleece every "bule" that comes along. There are even "bule"s in this country whose sole purpose in life is to fleece other newcoming bules.

Unless you have a bottomless pit of money, tread carefully and be prepared to move slowly.

Bribery, is part and parcel of ALL life regardless if the are Asian, European, American, Australian or African. It's the darker but real shades of doing business.

You also need to look at ENRON's energy deal and it's link to the white house, Sir Peter Abeles ties with his PM, HIH, OneTel, Pasminsco, Ansett, Policing in NSW,Aust, to name a few thats close to the region. That's what was in the papers.

So, narrowing the bribery part to Asian life is an easy and a selfish way of justifying one's action or inaction. Let's have a broader sense of guidance here guys.

Kaptin M and any other SE Asian pilots,

Im have recently returned from SE Asia back to Australia after spending time researching job opportunities in Singapore and Malaysia. I have been through the Singapore yellows pages with phone calls, emails, checking websites and sending resumes. With very little luck. I feel like I am trying to find a needle in a hay stack although I know it has been done before. I fell in love with Asia and want to do what I love there. ( Thats flying guys but the girls did catch my eye. China Jump, Anywheres and Canigies was very eye opening)

Like finding my job in Australia it started here on Pprune with someone taking me under their wing and showing me the way. Research here and advice that I get is worth more than gold to me.

I would like advice on companies in Asia especially Singapore where Australian bush pilots can get work. Even just a place to start looking as my efforts have born no fruit.

I realise that things are very slow at the moment but I am looking forward to the future.

Very interesting to see you in this part of PPrune Wizard of Auz. You will not remember me as I changed my Login name since im looking for advice in a different part of the world. So how is Leonora. SE Asia is heaps better!!

As per my last post I would really like some advice and I know there are guys out there with the knowledge so lets hears it lads.

S/E Asia would definately be better than Exmouth or anywhere in the bush for that matter, but there is still fun to be had and planes to be flown. Good luck with your flying in Asia it looks great even from a passenger seat.
