LABUAN: An RMAF Hawk 108 fighter jet skidded and crashed while landing at the airport runway here yesterday. The pilot of the two-seater aircraft, Lt Abdul Majid Kassim, managed to eject safely in the incident which happened at 1.38pm.

RMAF public relations officer Mejar Roslan Salam said in a statement that Lt Abdul Majid underwent a check-up at the Armed Forces Medical Centre in Labuan.

He said the wind was strong, causing the pilot to have difficulty in controlling the aircraft.

Mejar Roslan said the aircraft came to a stop on its own by the side of the runway.

"The plane from the No. 9 Squadron of the Kuantan RMAF base was assigned to Labuan to help in surveillance operations in Sabah,'' he said.

The RMAF has set up a board of inquiry headed by Mejar Mohamad Nor Rashid Samion with Mejar Azahari Mohamad Yusof and Mejar Atan Bakhti Abdul Malek to help investigate the incident.

The last incident involving such an aircraft was on Sept 10, 1998, when a a single-seater Hawk 208 crashed at Gua Musang, Kelantan, killing the pilot.

Fourth Division RMAF commander Brig-Jen Shahron Ibrahim said that the Hawk was returning from a sortie to Sabah's east coast where Malaysian security force has been beefed up following the Philippines military assault against the Abu Sayyaf in Jolo.

Jen Shahron said the inquiry team was scheduled to arrive today.

The RMAF has five Hawks among other aircraft to help in the patrolling of Sabah east coast waters bordering the Philippines.

And just how strong was this crosswind lah? - I was there twice last week and couldn't see any skidmarks out of the normal ( or gouges in the dirt at the side of the runway ). It must have got cleared away fast!
