Just wondering if anyone has any info about a WW2 airfield which I believe was at Aldworth near Newbury in the UK...

Search of PPRune only turns up The Bell at Aldworth - which seems to be / have been the favoured drinking spot several aviation related people...

Thanks in advance for any details.

The nearest airfield is Hampsted Norris about 1nm SSW.

Generally returning to agricultural use but much of the original taxyways and the main E/W runway still exist and are used by the farmer for GA. Hangars near the farm always seem to have two or three A/C in residence. Dispersal areas and underground shelters in the adjacent woods are still visible in places but these are gradually succumbing to nature. Compton CPT VOR on airfield. (06/2005)

Landed at Hampstead Norris in the early 60s and had to leave a/c overnight was invited to put a/c in hangar being used as Agricultural store to find a number of crated and inhibited Tiger moths stacked in the back. I was told that they had been stored there since the war and the farmer was still waiting for them to be collected!

If you look on http://maps.live.com/ and search for Hampstead Norreys (note the spelling!), then follow the B4009 north east on Wyld Court Road, you will see a left hand bend as the road then heads north towards Aldbourne.

The aerial pic gives a good view of the remains of the airfield, and which is about half way between the villages of HN and Aldworth.

One of many in our area, since we had Greenham, Aldermaston, Welford, Harwell, Membury and Ramsbury all close by.

Thanks to everyone for the info / tips.....

Was asking because I had the pleasure to visit the Golf Club at Goring a few weeks ago and my host said there are local but unconfirmed stories among the club's members that some of the hazards on the course are old craters from attempts to bomb the Aldworth air base.....

So....Being curious, can anyone, please, confirm the dates that the airfield was active and/or finally decommissioned for military use ? We could then perhaps establish the truth whether it was the Luftwaffe or the Greens Staff of the day who are responsible....

Thanks in advance....
