fellow ppruners i need aircraft recognition help please and i know you are the guys and gals to do it!

i was in my garden the other day when a plane flew over coming from marshalls.
as i looked up imagine my suprise and wonder at what type of plane she was. i know they do wing replacement there but she had been turned into a one prop plane with it not on the nose but one on the right wing with the engine but not on the other wing. i think i vaguely recall from the inquest that the left and right on planes is the other way round or dependent on when you look at them. so it was flying north west and i was facing north east...ish! don't know if that helped. it was a moderate size and sounded not quite light aircraft but not herc engine either.
i bet my description is a bit pants and hopefully you don't laugh at it too much but it has got the bettter of my curiosity.
stay safe
keep the faith:ok:

You mean, you're admitting that you've seen it?

Sorry, but you know what this means.

That's not my Bv141. :ok:

I've just checked and it's still in the spare room wardrobe hidden from Mrs Ex who does not appreciate models of unusual aircraft. :ugh:

In 1940/1, I played hooky from school and went to Marshals Cambridge with a London Brick Company lorry driver to deliver bricks there.
As we passed a hanger a black painted Wellington bomber was being wheeled out. It was a magical moment for me and has stuck in my memory all these years.

....that one had two engines......:=

i think it must have been the engine testing at marshalls from diginagain! just to reassure al i have yet to see one of those in the air, parked outside but not in the air, but i'll be sure to post if i do!

XV 208 belonged to A Line at Lyneham and i helped remove equipment the evening before her departure to ? official secret we were told ,then months later pictures appeared of her in a flight magazine in her new disguise as a weather bird complete with long pole sticking out the front . 1972/73ish i think

Yes, known as 'Snoopy', it had a long pole with red markings on it sticking out of the front.

These were known, irreverently, as lipstick marks....:ooh:

The 'barbers pole' now resides at the Met Office HQ in Exeter, as it was paid for by the Met research scientists.

Sorry to but in but but to answer the origional question this sounds like one of Burt Rutans designs. He did fly a beast with unequal span wings, the cockpit in one pod and the engine in the other.
On the other hand too much red bull can do that to you. Just burp and you'll be OK.

thanks, the cockpit was definitely where it should be, well where i normally know that it should be! the wings looked equal length, there was no snoopy no lipstick marks (fnar fnar!) sorry will grow up now....
there better!
it had one engine on one wing that was all nowhere else, the engine had a propellor on it hence why i say a one prop engine. i could of course be talking out my proverbial as i don't know if that is what qualifies as i one prop engine.
it was grey in colour. like i think that would help but it has been really annoying me trying to find out what it is as i have never seen anything like it.

Slightly off thread but I clocked a Gnat (Gib, summer 79) with similar wx probe and numerous other appendages. Was told that it was from RAE Farnborough.

The Gnat must have been some sort of trials jobby and would have had an instrumented pole on the front, by custom and practise they tend to be red and white striped. The last (RAF flown) Met Recce cabs were Snoopy and a Canberra. The presnt aircraft, FAAM (http://www.faam.ac.uk/), is a BAE 146 operated on behalf of the Met Office and NERC by Direct Flight.

Obliged for that Green Flash.

Was quite a week. We were lowly cadets on a JSC but the delights of the Rock were manna from heaven! Best of all was the a/c activity. Fleet exercise involving Canberra's and Hunters (I believe the Hunter's were very low level and possibly simulating air-to-ship missiles?) plus Nimrod's from St Mawgan (which shook the whole island every night as they took off - we were lucky enough to have a tour of one of them) and even 2 Harriers showed up (from Cottesmore we were told but I'm not sure).

Flown round the island on an S-61, tours of HMS Kent and RFA Tidespring and firing SLR's on the cave range (set up like the Falls Road IIRC?) made for one hell of a week.

Happy memories.

Somebody's bombs must have been off target if Gib became an island!

Fair shout Topbunker - you have clearly slept in the knife drawer !

As the Spanish were ultra awkward re airspace infringement I'm sure you know what I meant !

Best wishes,

An expression I hereto only ever heard from my Grandparents what were from Oldham.

Very interesting re Oldham as the lad I picked it up from was from that very locale! Worked together near Bolton many moons ago. Another favourite was "no pots broken" to describe a poor day at the production plant.

Best wishes,
