With the recent annoucement of V Australia and their codeshare with Northwest on flights in the USA, i'm curious as to how one goes about booking onward connections? e.g. SYD-LAX-MSP

Or is it the simple matter of booking both sectors separately, and re-checking your baggage on arrival in LAX?

If they codeshare, you'll be able to travel on the same aircraft with either a V Australia or Northwest ticket.

Hopefully the codeshare goes both ways, so you can book with V and travel on NW flights in Americaland, in which case it will mean that travelling domestic first and then international, you'll be able to check your baggage through.

There's never going to be automatic check-through of baggage from international to domestic, because you will need to physically present your bags at customs upon the arrival of an international flight. This has nothing to do with codesharing, and everything to do with customs and immigration.

Hmm...back in the days when NW operated the route themselves they used to have a deal where they doubled the airmiles on any trip that included Sydney.

The accountants had done the math based on their US customers, but if you started your trip in London and did LHR-MSP-LAX-SYD-LAX-MSP-LHR then you picked up enough miles for a free LHR-SYD return every second trip.
