Off to OFT in July to start my Zero-ATPL course. Just a few questions.

What insurances do I need? Im guessing loss of medical, and contents insurance is that all? (The school provide insurance if I ruin an aircraft for $200).

Next I have been given a list of equipment I need and was wondering if anyone could explain on where to get it?


Headset
Sectional chart (excuse the stupidity but what is this)
Airport facility directory
Aircraft checklists
pilot operating handbooks
fuel strainer
E6B Flight computer
Flight plotter
FAR'S (what is this)
LogbookIm guessing i will need a JAA and an FAA logbook as i am doing an FAA ppl and then the rest JAA.

I'd talk to BALPA about your insurance; that's what i'm doing at the mo. You have to join but as you'll be a student then you get membership for free while you're training; called Associate Trainee Membership.

I think they need to see a copy of your current medical along with a copy of your acceptance letter stating start and finish dates. Once you've sent all that in then they send you any relevant info.

Ok there are so many headsets can anyone recomment a decent one that I can buy on a student budget!

Just picking up on a point in the first post, you are expected to pay $200 insurance in case you break an aircraft? What a rip off!

As for god headsets on a student budget, the good old David Clarks provide a decent headset for not too much money. You can find a local dealer to you from the DC website, here:-

A lot of people I know would look at something like the H10-30, which has good noise attenuation and is in general a good, solid, reliable headset.

As for the charts, talk to the school and find out exactly which ones you need, and then find your local Pooleys dealer and ask them to get hold of the required charts for you.

With regard to supplies, buy everything when you are in the US. You would be a bit silly to buy it prior to going. The exchange rate favours doing it all when you land out there - just remember to leave space in your luggage for the return journey!
Of course, do a bit of research with regard to which headset you want to buy prior to going, etc.
It might be even better to order it up a few days before you arrive so it is waiting for you at the school upon landing.

For sectionals & an AFD, the local pilot shop on the airport. For everything else, get it ordered with an online US pilot shop with free delivery & huge savings on UK prices.

You will only need one logbook - it can all go in the same one. Get a JAR one.

Regarding the checklist, not sure how the particular school operate, but I would imagine the school will issue you with their own one. Same goes for the POH.
