Airlines: AWAir (AWR/QZ) have declared that they will cease operations for restructuring from 8th March 2002. They plan to restart in June. Currently AWAir has an A310 (sitting in CGK) and an A320 (PK-AWE) in temporary colours. Routes are Jakarta to Medan, Surabaya and Denpasar. In 2000 airline had 3 A310s and one had a controversial incident regarding engine fire at Balikpapan, disputes with the airport resulted in QZ suspending BPN.
Airlines: Batavia Air have commenced operations on 7th January 2002 with a 737-200 using a US$1 million investment. Routes are Jakarta to Pontianak and Jambi. A Fokker 28 leased from Bali Air will serve more destinations. The 737-200 is reported to have come from Equal Tower Leasing at a rate of US$65,000 per month (Aircraft only?).
Airlines: Kartika Air have recommenced flying, with Jakarta – Surabaya – Makassar – Ambon and CGK-SUB-Makassar – (Timika) – (Biak) and Jayapura with 2 737-200s (PK-KAR and PK-KAS)
Airlines: Riau Airlines will commence operations this year with the provincial government and its local regencies investing US$5m with further funding available. Airline will serve various small airports in the province with its capital Pakanbaru using regional turboprops. This would be the highest investment in an airline to date since the deregulation in 1999.
Airlines: Merpati plans to lease 3 more F100s from a Singaporean company this year.
Airlines: Cartens Papua Airlines will commence operations this February with a 737-200 serving major cities in West Papua.
Regulatory: INACA will abolish minimum airfares as of 1st March. A price war is expected.
