SE Asian pilots,. .Im have recently returned from SE Asia back to Australia after spending time researching job opportunities in Singapore and Malaysia. I have been through the Singapore yellows pages with phone calls, emails, checking websites and sending resumes. With very little luck. I feel like I am trying to find a needle in a hay stack although I know it HAS BEEN DONE BEFORE. I fell in love with Asia and want to do what I love there.

Like finding my job in Australia it started here on Pprune with people taking me under their wing and showing me the way. Research here and advice that I get is worth more than gold.

I would like advice on companies in Asia especially Singapore where Australian bush pilots can get work. Even just a place to start looking as my efforts have born no fruit.

I realise that things are very slow at the moment but I am looking forward to the future.

Thanks in advance

If anyone wants to email instead of posting here feel free!

Ausexpat- I knew a few Singaporean pilots who trained in Australia. In regards to recruitment you have to be a permanent resident of Singapore or a resident of Malaysia. Otherwise they dont hire you. Many airlines around the world are recruiting within and tend not to hire expats.. .But there are still airlines that hire expats if you look around. Dont get depressed if Singapore does not hire you. You have to be persistent and consistent in the aviation industry. Just hang in there and eventually you'll land a job. For the mean time it's a good thing to build up twin turbine time for future prospects. All the best and i'm sure you'll become an airline pilot. <img src="smile.gif" border="0">

Have you thought about Royal Brunei Airlines ?. .You would have to get a New Zealand Licence.. .Then buy a B 767 rating. .Then put your name down with Rishworth Aviation in N.Z.. .Your first year's pay will be lousy, but after that it's much better than Virgin Blue & the others and you'll be flying in the big league.. .Just a thought

Broer,. . . .I know for a fact that there are Asians working, flying and making a life everywhere in the world inclusive of Australia. It is not easy because we lost the war. Had the Japanese won the war, the situation, I'm sure would be reversed.

Being Asian do not preclude you from making it anywhere, provided that you have the right to abode and work in that particular country, researching and applying for that job you are in love.. with.

I believe various websites can lead you to the proper channels. A B744 rated pilot with more 9000 hours is truly a suitable candidate for employment, I'm sure the future employer would like to see some resourcefulness, initiative and enterprise on your part to find a way to the interview stage.

Business is very different in western countries compared to Indonesia. It's more straight forward and more based on your qualifications and merits, rather than whom you know or what your relations are to the various managers in the company. Having said that I stress that they are not perfect either, so why dont you try your luck???

Sorry, I'm on long haul at present and can only log on occasionally. Yes I am serious. Among the latest bunch of joiners are guys 24 years old with zero jet time and some (a little) time on metro liners. RBA requires its piots to have either NZ or UK Licences. The reasons Aussie licences are not accepted are a result of the Aussie CASA not RBA.. .The road is as simple as I stated. Yes you do have to come up with the money for a B 767 rating which I think is about $40 000 Aussie. Most of the latest 20 or 30 joiners have done just this. Once they have a B 767 rating they have put their name down with Rishworth Aviation in New Zealand. As and when RBA needs more pilots they contact Rishworth and new pilots are sent up. It should be pointed out here that;

RBA is not for everyone. It is a small airline that does require fitting into. Some people who are perfectly good pilots just don't fit.

Mid last year and earlier when the low timers were recruited was before 11 September. Since then several airlines have either closed down or cut back. As a result more experienced pilots are now applying.

RBA does actively recruit train and employ local Bruneian pilots including those who are 'stateless'. The numbers are growing and we even have some women in the pilot training system. I should add here that the local pilots are trained at places such as Oxford, and are get UK frozen ATPLs. You work out how good they are.

During the first year you are on a Rishworth contract. That means that the recruitment company are paid by RBA and then they pay you after they have taken a sizable cut for themselves. After a year you are paid by RBA tax free.

I bought my own rating to get into RBA a few years ago now. I had to beg it from various sources, but after joining I was able to repay it within 3 months.

No I am not management. I am a bog standard line pilot. The airline has been good for me and instead of following the common trend of knocking the company, I'm calling it as I have seen it for the last 9 years.

There will be skeptics and there will be doubters. Gallileo had a pretty tough time too, I hear.

Thanks for the idea about RBI Wings, it is food for thought.

Broer I wish I could help the only thing I that I can suggest as far as Aust goes for 747 400 drivers is QF. Like Mr Login said with 9000 hrs you would be truly suitable for employment. Perhaps there is a cargo operator who flys a 747 in Australia but I don't know where. If you put the question on Dunnunda and Godzone someone will tell you. However it would be appreciated if you email me with what you know about Indo and SE Asia. :)

Keep the ideas rolling in gentleman.

Hi Ausexpat,

It is tough getting into Singapore Airlines if you do not possess thousands of hours under your belt. I believe they recruit expats purely for the left hand seat. Note, I m no airline pilot. I m a local with an Aussie CPL and yet I do not even get a chance to go for the 1st interview for their cadet pilot programme.

In the Navy. .I am unsure if a JAA would work for the positions advertised in the Australian papers however it can never hurt to throw in a resume and see what the response is.

Frying Dutchman,. .I am aware that SIA only employs expats for the LHS however like you I am interested in RHS time also. I do believe that there are companies that operate lighter jets than SIA and was interested in them. If you want to compare notes email me.

In The Navy.

JAA licence is not able to be used in Australia or on an Australian registered aircraft anywhere in the world.

Licence must be converted to an Australian.

For those pilots who have been contacting me privately asking more about Royal Brunei, I can tell you the following;. .I spoke with the boss yesterday and prospects for expat employment are not good. We might be looking to employ about 4 expat pilots this year. The rest of RBA's pilot recruitment needs will be met by Bruneian pilots coming back from training in the U.K. Any expat pilots will be selected from the books of Rishworth, and as they now have type rated and experienced B 767 drivers on their books, the chances of a zero hour type rated B 767 pilot getting a start now are as close to zero as makes no difference.. .In short, do not go and buy a B767 rating with the hope of getting a job with Royal Brunei in mind.. .Sorry if I built up any false hopes.. .Good luck anyway.

What about joining Singapore Airlines (Mauritius) with an Austrailian base? Do they take First Officers? I've seen them advertise for DE Captains.
