I have a LAME mate thinking of applying for a job in Port Moresby either full time or on contract 4 weeks on 4 weeks off. He wants to know how safe it is given the crime etc. Should he make sure the airline provides safe secure housing. Is the pay rate higher because of the safety problems? Any help would be appreciated.

Mate, New Guinea is safe enough but it is somewhere you would really need to keep your wits about you everywhere you went. Stacks of expats live there but most are savvy enough and keep away from dangerous situations. The money and conditions would want to be good to keep someone fulltime but there must be more than 100 engineers worldwide who tour to New Guinea, mostly on 3 or 4 on, the same off. Airlines PNG or Air-Nugini?

Got flown over there about 7 yrs ago for an interview.

Bars on all the windows of "remote" buildings set up for expats.

These buildings are as I said,"remote" from your place of work.

No way was I going to bring my family here or even myself on my own.

Money at the time wasn't all that flash either compared to back home where

one feels pretty safe.
