View Full Version : What's the official fastest between Sydney & Melbourne?

Critical Reynolds No

In a commercial aircraft only. I note the fastest speed is located here:
http://records.fai.org/general_aviation/commercial_routes.asp?id=sydney

Was this an United Airlines flight? IS the speed ground speed? I assume so.

Thanks!

I'd hazard that the speed is the average speed.... ie, time in transit divided by the distance.

The concorde speeds arent much higher... so its not a highest instantaneous speed.

This was a conversation topic I had with my mentor an ex TAA old timer, he seemed to recall it was 47 mins wheels off to wheels on YSSY to YMEN, B727-76 in the mid 60's.:ok:

im guessing it is average speed including that of take off and landing. or to wheels up and gear down?

It cant be chock-to-chock time, because pushback to take-off alone in Sydney often takes around 45 minutes!

It's over the top to over the top and requires independant verification, ATC can do this if requested.

Capt Verne Jobst record was broken on a United Airlines flight LA to YMML flight or vice versa.

Likewise the late Steve Fosset set a record in his CitationX Perth(WA) to overhead Hobart(Tas), earlier this decade.

Hey All,

With the record we set it was wheel off to wheels on ( must be suported by an external /auditable person, refuler or tower is fine). Distance is great circle measurement from point to point using long and lat.
Speed is time over calcuated distance not actual track.

Cheers,
Solocmv.

Grate Circle? Fastest round trip between cattle grates? Must have been a regional airline record I guess, haven't seen many cattle grates in Sydney of late...

The venerable Electra was faster than the 727 on the SY-ML route due to its ability to keep its speed up a lot longer into the approach, ie didn't have to slow down as early as a jet.

Of course, normal ATC sequencing stuffed that up.

Now the Electra was good, very good but I seriously doubt that overall it could beat the B-727 SYD-MEL and vice versa.

The DC6B was no slouch downhill either and could give an Electra a run for its money.

In the B727 a good professional having climbed @380kts, cruised at max with descent at 380 kts could be at 350kts at 15 miles and 1500ft and be on G/s, speed and profile at 2-300ft for another nice landing.

My best CBR-SYD start of roll to end of roll 17minutes; ATC could not have been more helpful; direct R/w 35 to SYD NDB and man did that baby sing!!!

Can't do this anymore; all railway line, SOP, CRM Politically correct stuff!

ps>>how fast did you say an B737; A320 go?

It was in the order of 25mins in a Mirage, a number of decades ago. Obviously supersonic and probably with a jet stream up the date, too many restrictions these days for it ever to be broken.

Just a thought, what is the altitude record between SYD & MEL?

FL42 in a B742 as pax. Skippers last trip, he had some fun.

It was VH-EBQ she of Longreach fame, can't remember when though.

FL42 would be some serious decent rate. :ok: Many on board that flight

Nah, just the end of the QF2, 25 tons of gas, not many pax, no cargo. I guess about the best time to do it.
