Just wondering, how do you compare those jobs that some of our ex-colleaques have landed in terms of $$$, lifestyle, job security, workload etc..etc... KAL, CAL, SQ, UL, EK , if opportunity comes ( might not be true with a few of those now..). How can you compare....

P.S I know everyone have their own priorities but it will be interesting to see the differeces.

I think this is very relative issue in the sense that different people are looking for different things. Of course in order for someone to give up everything at home for a new place, the carrot must be good enough. This should come in a package rather than $$$ alone.

For example, CX & SQ are offering high basic salary + other perks such as housing, education, tranfer allowances etc. Of course the content of the Conds of Svc need to be read carefully. CX for example is offering permanent employment with expats status to HKG based crew except for local crew. EK is known as offering "Golden handshake" worth USD 1 million after 10 yrs of service. SQ will give expats status to everybody except Malaysians. Those are examples from few companies around this region.

Really, it depends on what is in your mind. As for me, I will go to a company that is strong enough to compete thus ensuring job security, good benefits, less politics and good retirement scheme. If you shop around, you will find one that is suitable to your requirement. Choice of aircraft is the bottom most of my list.

With EK 1 million USD. after 10 years of service ?

This would mean $100.000,- per year extra.
Which is already more than a salary per year.

That doesn't sound right does it ?

Well, apparently some of the guys have made it really good. I had a long chat to one not so long ago and we spoke a lot on how things have changed for him after leaving MAS.

There is certainly more cash in the pocket and definitely less politics. Overall, it seems to me that the things one would have to consider before leaving is LIFE in general.
How much money do you require for the journey you're after. A bit like fuel ordering. Too much you'll be wasting and too little, you'll never get there. How much does it take for you to have the life you're after? If you are after private schooling for the kids, a Merc for the Missus, a boat or a plane for yourself and what have you (Rolex for the Css), then you definitely have to go away.

There is also the question of how well you would adjust to the local condition, eg: climate, food, lifestyle, friends? If you're a cool sort of dude, then it would not be too much of a problem, but if you are one bitter bugga, then the best then is to retire and go away gracefully. The family consideration is paramount if family happiness is ultimately your goal when you retire. All that money would not be worth it if in the end you are just going to be a lonely old b'stard...correct?
Religion is of course a big issue too. If you're muslim and can't take most food out there because most would not be Halal, then you have gotta to think of how to adjust to that. Can't see and can't touch booby girls too...tough.

I'll definitely will be going when the opportunity comes.

Good Luck Kurmitola

Some questions:
For example, if you are an expatriate pilot working for SIA during a long 5-year contract can a member of your family get a work permission to get a job in Singapore? Does SIA give any chance for an expat pilot's son?
Thanks.

What! even Malaysian Taliban like Kurmitola is thinking of running away from MAS when the chips are down.

It is people like Kurmitola who had partly damaged Malaysian Airline with their bigotry and Islamic fanatism.

Now that most of them had been been removed from MAS management with the crackdown by Malaysian government on anything to do with Islamic fundalmentalism.

Hey you think your kind can survive in those secular airlines you mentioned. Better look at Adrianne, PAL or some middle-eastern company that fit your profile.

Ha..ha.., U mean Ariana ( and PAL ? ) . Not rated on 727s or AN 24 yet thats why I,m still here. This " crackdown " is really getting me worried U know...dont want to be the first pilot to be subdued due to being very Talibanistic in stature.. . Yeah, yeah, did try to leave but they wont let me. U knowlah, being one of the boys....company sponsoredlah katakan. Dont try to"' kacau " me okay !Still paying for the sponsorship....till when..I dont know. Hey, those friends of ours are really getting their $ worth of the Korean Chill. May be a hot bowl of pochintang will help. I guess I will have to stay and show appreciation to the taxpayers for paying me to do 30-40 hours a month. The company dont mind ( oops ! the company mind but the government dont) to carry the excess baggage at the taxpayers' expense and we will continue to fly a dozen or so businessmen to EZE in an otherwise empty a/c so they can visit their friends and cattle and horses there. BOLEH !!!!!!

Kur,. .You can still leave, company sponsored or not. Actually you were only sponsored in terms of getting you the weight of the airline on your side while doing your training, conversions and no interest loan, as you rightly said, to the detriment of the taxpayers. Taxpayers rights are insignificant in Malaysia, so we'll not talk about them.

Other than that, there is nothing to stop you from leaving. You could just give them the necessary notice and off you go. You can still pay back the 0%Loan with some of the USD$$$$$$$s. Won't cost you much anyway, maybe around $400-$500USD p/m. You can pay that off in no time. Better yet, you might not want to pay it at all and play dumb like the rest of the guys.

Yes Kurmitola not only to see their women there also to check out their black money which they stack up there.

The recent bankcruptcies of banks in Argentina had hit them hard. Serve them right.

Hey, Just heard that Mr. Sri Lankan man is starting in SQ in next couple of months, on the 777. Wonder why....May be the pay is better and nearer to home as well. Anybody knew whats the pay like in UL ? Heard the cost of living is quite low and the " Tiger " factor is slowly diminishing...good news for tourism and the country's economy. Heard EK is flying to PER and KIX soon. Anybody heard anything about that ?
