Bob Tait or Trevor Thom?

I am interested as to what you find more effective and better study material for the PPL exam and the CPL exams and why. Which would you rather if you had the choice? Which of the two publications delve into more detail?

I understand all the knowledge needed is right in front of you in the books but would appreciate an insight as to which (if any) is regarded better.

Some will say ATC is good, but don't listen, I know for a Fact if i had Relied only upon ATC books I would have failed more than one exam.

I own a set of both, Maybe buy ATC aerodynamics in addition to Bob's as I did not get the best result in Aerodynamics, whereas the rest I went really well. As for air law ill be the judge tomorrow :-) last exam.

Bobtaits are more orientated to simply passing the cyber exams.

Well I’m not sure about the PPL side of things but the CPL theory I’d use Bob Tait all the way :ok:, found every one of his books spot on including the IFR manual for reading before attempting your IREX. I self studied them all and found his books right on the mark.

I think Bob has a good way of writting his manuals which makes them come across easy to read as if you were learing it in a classroom from a teacher.

I wouldn’t go as far as to say Trevor Thom isn’t good just found Bob Tait’s books fantastic with all the info needed for the exams and enough as well to understand what you’re meant to be learning about with out waffling on or going to a completely different level into the subject that wasn’t required.

That’s from my experience anyway…

Another plus in bob taits, is the fonts! much more pleasant on the eyes.

He has a awesome way of teaching things, I had alot of trouble taking in performance & loading, threw the atc back in the shelf bought Bob's did the exam and got 96% and finished 45mins early!

His books were updated this year which is good.

If your doing your PPL exam, buy the BT PPL Book. It will also help as when you pick up a CPL book, you will notice Bob already showed you this in his PPL book!

Nothing against Trevor but after doing Bob's course he's the bomb!

Bob Tait all they way. Definatly suited to the CASA cyber exams (except for CPL Human Factors i think), but i would also recommend getting some extra practice exams/material from a flying school etc.

Trevor Thom books were fantastic when Trevor Thom was writing them... unfortunately that hasn't been the case for more than ten years now. The information is still in the books, but the knowledge just doesn't jump off the page in to your head like they use to.

Never had a set of Bob Tait books, but everyone who has recently seems to love them, don't think you can go too far wrong.

Another vote for Bob Tait - I blogged about my experience with ATC v Bob here (http://www.squawk-1200.com/bob-tait-is-the-man/). 6 out of 7 exams done and making the decision to swap to Bob Tait texts was a smart one.

I used the Trevor Thom books and passed the BAK, PPL and CPL first go, but that was 11 years ago.

I still have them but they are awfully dusty now!

I used Trevor Thoms to fill in the blanks of the Ruth King text books (about 11 years ago now). Personally, I would not bother with the ATC books just on their own.

I find this hard to believe considering the good man Nathan Higgins uses Bob Tait for his own AFT ATPL Human Factors course (well at least of a few years ago)

And there lies the problem with todays standards. Nobody is giving two hoots about standards. Just the quick and easy path. Personally, I have too much pride in my work to be ok with this line of tought. It will catch up with you eventually :ugh::ugh:

I would not have a job without the MAN thats BOB T ...I am 61 and still in the industry started late at 31.

Like Bob would say dont be a shelia read both books and compare, if ya cant afford to buy both, go to a flying school and ask around, somebody will have both and probably lend em to you.

Well, i have to go with the general concensus saying that Bob Tait is great, his books were really good, but i also found that after reading them the ATC ones were awesome as well but i'd probably not recommend ATC all on their own.

Another Vote for Bob, Have both ATC is just far to detailed. Just take a look at performance and planning if you need the proof!

Definitely Bob Taits. Considering that Bob is a qualified teacher, he knows how to structure paragraphs and write clearly and concisely for the student, so that you understand exactly what he means. And he covers exactly what you need for the exams.

I originally bought all the Trevor Thom books as they were the required texts for my uni course, however found in many instances that they gave the wrong information (at times our lecturers told us to ignore the book) and were just not written very well. Since then, I haven't used them (waste of $) and have used Bobs book with good results. Also a plus that he gives lots of practice questions that are very much like CASA exam questions.

I think it's clear from the many posts here, that Bob Taits books win over ATC/Trevor Thoms.

I did Bob's courses for PPL, CPL and IREX, and have also used Trevor Thom's, but have to say Bob's books are better, more focused on explaining things and passing the exams.

I used ATC as my sole study source for my first CPL exam and regretted it - several mistakes and conflicting information in the ATC textbook.

Bought all Bob's books after that and only use the ATC stuff for backup.

Yet another vote for Bob Tait - I used his books for CPL and IREX and found them great. I wish he had ATPL materials.
