Just started TR with a major carrier. Wanted to get Loss of Licence insurance. I have a pre-existing medical condition but nothing that stops me from flying and holding a class 1.

Is BALPA the best place to go for LOL insurance or does anyone have any other good companies they use?

I dont know who you are flying for, but LOL insurance can be expensive, hard to claim, and volatile in cost. My only advice is google "topcover" and pass the details to your HR department. If they show any interest, I am sure Topcover will pursue for you.

Does your "major carrier" provide you with any? I thought that was fairly standard these days....

income protection is much better option and can be specific, ie unable to do current job in order to pay out. I personally would rather have a salary/income than a lump sum to gamble/drink away.... Also you will find many more income protection insurance companies than you would pilots loss of licence. Assuming its medical reasons you wanting insurance for that is.

Generic income protection is no good for a pilot because likelihood is after losing your Class1 you can still do most jobs ordinary people do. With LOL you get paid if you lose your medical and you can pursue another career happily (in my case one that brings home more money!!!).

If you're a member of BALPA give BALPA Financial Services a call - They are pretty helpful and not on a hard sell mission...

BALPA loss of licence is good - and you can also get temporary cover that kicks in after 3 months. £40 a month and you get £80k cover, £1600 a month temporary cover, tax free. Claims process straight forward, and there aren't loads of exclusions. If you want more info, PM me.

try with APPN...E 54 x month and you get temporary lol after the 29th day with E 6300 x month...this will last for about 3 years reducing to 50% after the 182th day of inability.
