Hi all,

I am 14 on the 25th and i am currently looking for a little job to earn some money...

Would an airport/flight school, etc.... employ me to do a little job such as helping other members of staff, general errands, cleaning aircraft, etc...

If so, then what specific jobs would i be allowed to do at my age?

EGMC (Southend) is reasonably small, would this increase my chances of finding a saturday job as they are probably less stringent if you know what i mean?

I have sent an email to the airport, but i wanted to see what kind of answers i would get here

Kind regards,

Your too young to work legally I'm afraid, you would need to wait until you turn at 16 least and your lovely NI card pops through the post.

Plus, with the CRB checks that many airport based jobs ask for these days, it is even more unlikely you will be able to get a job being under 16.

I was in the same situation as you a few years ago; I couldn’t wait to get involved in aviation. Unfortunately like the other 2 posts state to work at any airports you would need to be 16 not only for a CRB check but also I would of thought from a health and safety side to. However I don’t see any reason why a private airfield wouldn’t be able to employ, so I suggest you look there.

Good Luck

Not true. You can work a limited amount from 13 onwards. There's a weekly limit to the hours you're allowed to work but a saturday job shouldn't be a problem. I'm sure any of the schools at Saaarfend would be pleased to have someone to help, though whether they'd actually pay you is a different matter!

You could always try volunteering to help out, and then hit the parents with how good you are, and how much effort you're putting in, and squeeze some money out of them. That way if anything does turn up workwise at the airport your face will be known and you might find all sorts of things coming your way. I'm sure the clubs have spare seats in aircraft from time to time, so you might get the odd hour here and there.

Wander down and have a chat to the good folks at Seawings. I did my flying scholarship with them many years ago, they're a reasonably good, friendly set up.

As for CRB etc. do you think they CRB check all their PPL students? I seriously doubt that! As you'd be looking at working/helping out on the GA side of the field I reckon you should be ok.

1) CRB checks are for employees only, not students who would be counted as escorted visitors for the purposes of airport security regulations.

2) You can work at the age of 14, but the same law applies to you as it does to paper boys/girls, limited hours per day/week and restrictions as to what you can do during term time.

3) You will not get paid any money however, if you work hard and make an impression, you'll certainly get experience in the back seat of various aircraft and, when you've proved yourself to be reliable, you may get the occassional hour in return for a lot of hard work.

You won't earn any money being a hanger rat, but you'll gain invaluable experience and after putting a lot of hard work, you'll be able to build up hours and maybe even get your ppl on the back of it.

Good luck to you, but remember that most flying clubs are struggling to survive at the moment, so don't expect a royal welcome and if you are lucky enough to get a placement somewhere, work hard and try not to piss anyone off.
