Hej guys, just got back from the NZ Embassy in Berlin and my wife qualifies for immigration to NZ because her employment and schooling is in demand. I have had a look around and there is not much info regarding hiring in NZ with Air Nelson. What is the path to a job with these guys? My wife and I really like NZ, but we will only consider immigrating if we can both work there in our respectfull occupations...Is all the hiring done through Air New Zealand? Or is it done seperately? If we are to move there, then I can come with my wife... but I also would like to work as a pilot if we go. I have almost 7000 hours on the Dash 8 300/400.... any help on news would be great! And I don't mind starting out in the right seat again...
Bye for now!

You apply directly to them with a paper CV, they are hireing at the moment... However there is a fair bit of industrial unrest there at the present time, you might want to wait untill that is finished. I'm sure somebody here will be able to post the address for you.
If you want to find out what sort of employer they are, there is another thread on this forum about their pilots striking.

Nelson handle their own recruiting independant of AirNZ. There is notoriously little info out there about it, so best bet is just to call them and explain your situation. They're fairly light on crew at the moment, so 1000's of hours on type is just about a given :P

The industrial action is over terms and conditions. There's no problem with hiring as far as I know, so don't let that put you off. If it gets to that grubby stage, the news would be spread worldwide through IFALPA.
The other guys are correct, direct contact with Air Nelson is the path. Normally about a 70 min interview when your number comes up.
They run a strict seniority system, so expect to start as a FO. Don't know what the time to command is, but shouldn't be too long.
Good luck.

May I ask... what is the starting salary like? What are the rotations like? What bases are open for Dash pilots? We are pretty serious about moving out of Europe, and Nelson would really be the place for us, may I ask for those who know this town.... what is it like to live there?
Any news or help would be great... I will start with ASL soon to get my ICAO/JAR ATPL converted to the NZ ATPL.
Thanks again

G'day there,

If you like the cooler climates why not cover all bases and give Mt Cook airlines a call as well??

Christchurch based on the ATR 72 and the best money out of the link carriers as far as I'm aware.

Money at Air Nelson I would guess as around 50k plus some allowances for FOs and 90k for capts?? Only a guess as I haven't worked for Air Nelson but that shouldn't be too far from the truth... On that sort of money plus a second income from your wife you should be able to live quite comfortably even if house prices are a bit high at the moment...

NZ is a great place to live.

Cheers :ok:

DHC6to8,

As previously mentioned don't restrict yourself to Air Nelson. Mt. Cook is definately an option for you. based in CHCH, operating ATR72-500's but a fleet replacement decision to be made next month, leading contender is the DH8-Q400.

All the Air NZ Link carriers have a strict seniority system so all new employees will start as F/O's unless joining as a management pilot.

Application to Mt. Cook can be done via www.pilot.staffcv.com (first application free) or hard copy CV to

Capt. Allan Brown
Line Ops Manager
Mount Cook Airline
P O Box 14-020
Christchurch.

Tel: ++64-3-358-1200

Good luck with the immigration!

Man what a great bunch of guys, thanks for the info and the help. I have worked all around the world and I have met Kiwis in some of the strangest places (Antarctica/deep African bush/Indian ocean) and they all have lived up to the level of really great people.... while flying, having a brew or two, or sitting 'round a fire pit out in the bush....or on a bush wack in Ireland... thanks again. My wife and I are really hoping that everything will come together for us, I recently started planning the ATPL conversion, so that will take awhile to sort too.
Once again, Thanks

I was recently informed that Mt. Cook is possibly getting the Dash 8 400, Air Nelson might be getting them too eh? The Bombardier website only lists the Australian company Quantas Link as having them on fleet. Is there any other operators out there in NZ that will be getting them?
BTW, the 400 is really a great machine, and if any of you get the oportunity to fly her take it... I really hope to see more of them entering the world fleets...
fly safe and thanks again guys!

That Mt Cook is getting the Dash8-400 is pure rumour, the truth is that it is very evenly balanced between the ATR and the Dash for Mt Cook.

I am picking it will be a blue moon over the frozen landscapes of hell when Air NSN get a Dash 400. At USD138 per barrel for Singapore Jet the dash 400 does not look that good for the short sector NZ operation.

DHC6to8 the NZ ATPL air law is not that hard, just find someone who has sat it in the last few years and learn those questions and answers. The law exam does not change much at all, best of luck.

the truth is that it is very evenly balanced between the ATR and the Dash for Mt Cook.

Would hardly say it is very evenly balanced. The new ATR offers no new capacity, minimal payload if any over the exisiting -500, is top dollar due it's demand in India and the like and is about a 4-5 year wait to recieve. The Q400 on the other hand offers extra capacity, it's cheaper by a long shot, can be delivered within 2 years and also has the potential to morph into the 90 seat 400X. Sure it's got big lungs on it but it offers approx 100kts extra TAS and can get to the fuel efficient altitudes in a flash over the lumbering ATR.

I'd be very surprised if AirNZ went with the new ATR, even less surprised if they threw their curve ball and opted for some EMB170/190's.

Anyway, no more than 6 weeks till we find out they say....

There will be an second Australian Q400 operator, M@C@IR which is trying to renamed itself as Ansett M@C @ir I am not sure what the T & C are like as its just been taken over by a new owner , which has sourced 4 ex SAS Q400 the first one is due in 3 months, and the last one by the end of the year.

It state that your preference is for New Zealand, however its another opportunity for you to fly Q400 and the lifestyle in North Queensland isn’t to bad either.

Cool Banana and the others, thanks again for the help! My wife and I are pretty fixed on NZ, and she only qualifies for the NZ emmigration, so Aus is out of the question for me.
The more 400'S that enter the market: the more happy the customers, the management and the pilots... that is one fast, comfortable and efficient aircraft.
The SAS machines will need to be most likely 'moded': SAS likes to use AC grnd power as the majority of their different fleets use it.... where as the Dash 8 300/400's are designed to be using the DC grnd power....
I hope that Mt. Cook Airlines and Air Nelson will take the 400.... it is a great choice....
thanks again guys...

Skyhog, try ringing Air Nelson on 03 547 8700 and asking for an address or to speak to someone in charge of hiring. Air Nelson's mailing address is:

Air Nelson Limited
Private Bag 32
Nelson Mail Centre
Nelson 7042

I think, anyway.

Well, I hate to deliver bad news... but I cx my NZ ATPL exams (was supossed to write them at the NZ Embassy in Germany) because of the hassle involved... my wife and I are still very interested in moving our life together down to NZ... she is still being hounded to show up down there and start working... we most likely will head down for a few weeks and scope it all out later this year... I am just terrified of finding myself unemployed as a 10000 hr Captain and no ship to fly.... and worse than that... living off "me Sheil'as" income!!
Cheers

Anyone on the inside know when Air Nelson will be hiring again?
6mths? 12mths? Next week? I've got a friend with lots of turbo-prop time and she is thinking about going to Eagle.....I told her Nelson is better if she can get it and that if she does go to Eagle it would be hard to swap across. Sound about right?

Hard to tell mate - We've got a bunch of guys/girls on 'yes' letters right now. . . So obviously they'll get first dibs.

WHEN Air NZ starts taking on the multitudes of people it has on 'yes' letters then we'll see some serious movement throughout the Link carriers, but right now it is anyone's guess!

I got into Air NSN at the end of the last cycle about 18months ago. Let's hope the next one is just around the corner - for everyone's benefit! :}

Good luck :ok:
