What's the first step in obtaining a Forestry/Agricultural cert., needed I'm told if you're planning to enter the firefighting business?

In the US you need a FAA commercial and a Part 137 signoff. Thats enough to satisfy the feds, the major problem is getting enough flight time built up to satisfy the Insurance Companies which pretty much dictate who flies and who doesn't. Good Luck

It depends on which country you want to fly in firefighting duties. In Canada you need a certified mountain course to fly in British Columbia on fires, but it's not written as an endorsement on your pilot's licence. In Europe, only Spain has a specific endorsement (80 hours groundschool and 15 hours flying time to have it stamped on your licence). Chile also has a similar requirement...

So if you give us some more info about the country you want to fly in and the licence you have, there can be more information available.

Thanks for the response. The question was regarding Spain, thinks does that include Portugal as well? Presently holding JAR ATPL(H).

Only Spain has the requirement for a forestry/agricultural rating, Portugal does not.

But the funny thing about Spain is that, according to the local Air Regs (LNA-Ley de Navegación Aeronáutica), to be able to act as Pilot in Command of a Spanish-registered aircraft you MUST have european citizenship.


So, unless you already have this two requirements, Potugal would be your best bet.
