That is not only a SA problem, it is happening at a lot of places; it applies also to different jobs in different industries. If people are prepared to leave home, country and friends, they may be able to get, if aplicable, visa and work permits and find the "greener" pastures.
Politicians and employers are at fault, if salary and conditions are acceptable, why would someone want to leave his / her place?

This is not only an SA problem, nor is it just the company mentioned in the article. I believe all SA aviation companys are going to be under a great deal of pressure in the next few years as the experience departs both from the engineering as well as the flight deck side. Some of this could be addresed with the necessary increases, but a lot of it will continue regardless, due to the situation in SA in general.

Do you blame the guys?
I remember a certain minister in Government telling the whites to bugger off if they not happy.
So, “OK”. Is any one surprised?
SA will become the new Zimbabwe, just give it time!
What person, be it a pilot, engineer, medical doctor or any other professional is not going to leave for a better future. Sad but true! The snow ball is picking up momentum and it's not going to get any better.

:hmm:

Well, insofar as it goes, and no further, any brain drain that there may be will not affect SAA in terms of piloting skill requirements. The airline seems to have made a sensible preemptive decision to become, in the main, an Airbus operator.:*

Just think there will always be a loss of skilled people to those countries which can afford them. Even though this is the case, I think the whole planet is kind of struggeling with recessions and the cost of living is going up almost everywhere. The man on the street feels it the most. Countries like India and China are booming, but for how long and I do not know if Westeners would ever fully adapt to those cultures. Times are changing (as they always where - survival of the fittest...).

The attitude and stance the ANC is showing towards the election in Zimbabwe is appalling - Thabo and Bob - brothers in arms. If the industry pulls out (or is thrown out) - yes we will be heading for just another Zim on the fast lane - the industry combined with the skills of the people, is the one and only force holding the country's economy together. If they want it so badly, why not let the ANC and it's supporters fall back into the stone age, only having themselves to blame. If you want to be a capital consumer, you have to play by rules of capitalism and contribute to the growth of your countries economy.

Ok, ok getting carried away by this one... just so unbelievable:ugh:

I thought all pilots in SA were so comfortable with their jobs and enviroment :confused:and did not need to go out

RANT MODE - It's not the pilots you need to worry about, it's the techs. At a quarter of a pilots salary, and more than double the amount of working hours per year, the problem is keeping the planes airworthy when the maintainers are 'burning out'. Corporate management sees techs as something barely human, doesn't realize that airlines consist of more than pilots and board of directors. - RANT MODE OFF

Everyone in the company contributes to the well-being and objectives of the company, and the company should reciprocate and really take care of the work force. To blame goverment only is nice, as they set the policies that are now contributing to the destruction of our country; but beancounters in businesses don't see any of that except which increases the profit margin
