Question for 737NG Drivers: Cross bleed start

G'day all...

When recieving taxi clearance this morning I was advised to follow a DJ 737 pushed back on to the apron taxiway, and "caution, 737 is doing a cross bleed start".

I simply turned on my bay and held a good distance off.

Q: What is a cross bleed start and what are the implications ?

During a cross bleed start on the NG or most jets that i know of, you must increase the thrust on the engine which has started to boost the air pressure to start the second engine. That is why you were told he was doing a cross bleed start. It might have been better to advise you that the 737 would be operating at higher than normal thrust setting on pushback.

Caution: there may be a delay as the crew rummage around in the Supplementary Normal Procedure section of the AOM looking for cross bleed starts :hmm::p

Similar procedure on a B717.

At ground idle the engine is 63-ish% N2. To generate sufficient bleed air to start the other engine, the operating engine thrust has to be increased to close to 80% N2, thus lots more jetblast to blow lighties and ground equipment around.

And what's the problem with rummaging thru the docs to do the job correctly? That's the safest and correct way to do it.
