Pilot of the Lincoln was Wg Cdr John Costello, CO of the Amberley squadron.

As a CFS instructor I converted him to Lincolns in company with a couple of other pilots. A strange thing happened preparing for a flight with two convertees. I was already seated in that Lincoln's silly little instructor's dickie seat with the first convertee beside me when I became concerned that John Costello had not appeared near the cockpit. We had already started engines. Now somewhat annoyed I untangled myself from the seat and made my way back along the fuselage and found John semi-conscious near the wing spar which was always an obstacle over which one had to climb.

John had hit his head on something unforgiving and some of his 'red' hair was a little redder. He soon insisted that he was well enough to continue so we went ahead and launched.

Not saying that there was any connection to his unfortunate demise.

RIP John.
