Chopper crash-lands on suburb

A HELICOPTER pilot and his passenger have survived a crash landing in a suburb in northern Queensland today.
Both men, believed to be in their 40s, were conscious when police arrived at the scene of the crash in a street in Stuart, south of Townsville, at 10.06am.
Rescue crews used the jaws of life to free the pilot after the two-seater helicopter landed heavily on its belly, police said.
An Emergency Management Queensland (EMQ) spokesman said the passenger had escaped the wreckage but collapsed afterwards.
"The pilot was trapped for a short time and fire brigades had to use the jaws of life to cut him out," the spokesman said.
"They cut away the joystick and control column to free him because he was actually pinned in his seat."
Both men were taken to Townsville Hospital with neck and back injuries.
The men are electrical contractors who were working on power lines.
