Anyone know which schools run a good IREX theory course? I know of Bob Tait but he can't be the only provider surely.
Thanks

I just finished Bob's CPL and IREX course, and can only sing his praises!
great teacher and you learn a lot from him.

By reading these forums you will see that most people recommend the Tait CPL and IREX books, so who better to teach than the guy that actually wrote them?

Just be prepared to put in the hard yards studying, regardless what ground school you go for, IREX is not easy, there are a lot gotchas in there.

Do a search, there has been about 3 threads on this in last month.

Romeocharlie,
Done the search but it only seems to mention Bob's course and a fellow in bankstown (his course takes 10weeks). I am a full time pilot and can't really get that amount of time off.
So if anyone know of a full time course other than Bob Tait please give us a shout. Bob's next one is July and I will be on it if I can't find one sooner.
Cheers

Ground Time (http://www.groundtime.com.au/) at Archerfield seem to run them, although their website says they are on an ad hoc basis until September. May be worth giving them a call and seeing what they can do for you...

Lionel Taylor in Moorabbin is great! His classes are not crowded, he is so interesting to listen to and covers everthing, you don't need to buy any books. He does Heli and fixedwing, and his Irex class took about 10 days. He had a great pass rate while I was there too. :D

Chopperline in Caloundra does them. Next one starts 26th August, runs for 12 days.
I believe they use Bob Tait's text books. The claim is they are the best option for rotary pilots.
Good luck. RT.

At Bankstown - try Jeremy Andrews, teaches at UNSW but also teaches IREX at Schofields Flying Club. The course is generally 2 nights a week, catering for those who work during the day. I believe the next course will be run in July - the current course if just finishing up.

Jeremy is a brilliant teacher and will have you chuckling at his stories! Can't recommend this guy enough!

Do many people self study for the IREX or do you really need to do a course?

AWA at Gold Coast Airport run IREX ground school 4 times a year. Next one starts next week on Tuesday. 10 days classroom. They have top class facilities and a top of the line SIM.

Ive done all of my CPL's, IREX and even some ATPL's with lionel. He is a great tutor. He still operates out of the Binis classroom at Moorabbin Airport.

I would say the best thing is that he not only teaches you the subject.... but he also teaches you the exam technique. My pass marks have all been around the 90% mark

Speaks for itself really

I plan to self study them. Is that a bad idea? My father did his in the 70s and self studied. Is it too hard to do now?

Self study for IREX is definitely possible, I just did it -- with a result of over 80% on the first attempt.

Get Bob Tait's book, work through it at least once, better twice, read and tag the relevant AIP/CAO/CAR sections religiously, work through all the questions in his book and if you want to be really sure get some more (on CD from your pilot shop or from Bob via his web site).

The questions are the secret here, Bob's book shows you how the actual exam questions will try to trip you up, you'll learn as much from doing the questions as you will from reading the AIP and his book.

Basically, IREX is CPL Air Law expanded for IFR ops, with a few VOR/NDB navigation and the odd CPL weather (mostly icing) question thrown in.

Enjoy, I must say I learned a helluvalot revising for this exam, and can't wait to do the actual flying..
