I keep getting a pop-up on my new "Deep Thought" computer. Never seen it on my old machine, despite having the same software in there.

It appears to be a spin off of Aple iTunes - and promotoes a web browser known as "Safari"......saying.....

Safari for Windows is the fastest and easiest-to-use web browser for the PC. It displays web pages faster than any other browser and is filled with innovative features -- all delivered in an efficient and elegant user interface.

For more information on Safari 3.1, please visit http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307467 (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307467)

I'm about to run a google and/or Wikiwhatsit search - but would appreciate the knowledge and experience of the resident Geek Squad.

Anybody know anything about it?

The apple update process checks for Quicktime and iTunes updates from time to time. Apple, in its wisdom, has now decided to foist Safari on PC users, in what could be considered an underhand manner. Next time there's an iTunes update, unless you look carefully it will install Safari, too: there's a pre-ticked box on the download page for Safari.

Some people are getting quite upset by it: people accept frequent online checks for software bugfixes, security fixes and updates, on the understanding that there won't be an unexpected download of unwanted software. If the latter method becomes common, people will turn off automatic checks for updates. Apple has really dropped the ball on this one.

FYI, Safari's adequate on a Mac but it's a bit of an also-ran on the PC.
