Timely Reminder about the SUPERVISION OF MAINTENANCE
A simple mistake by an unsupervised AME leads to a man's unfortunate death.

Subject: Manslaughter verdict for chopper crash...NZ Lames failed to ensure maintenance work to a chopper was properly supervised.

Sympathy for guilty aircraft engineers

There's sympathy from some in the helicopter industry for two men convicted for the manslaughter of a pilot who died in a helicopter crash.

A Nelson jury has found John Horrell and Ronald Potts failed to ensure maintenance work to a chopper was properly supervised, resulting in a crash which killed Philip Heney in 2005.

A senior member of the helicopter industry, who does not want to be named, says the men's mistake is a wake up call for the whole industry.

He says its common practice for unlicensed engineers to out-number licensed engineers in a hangar. That's because the standards for becoming fully qualified are so high.

He says while he feels sorry for the convicted men, he also has sympathy for Philip Heney's family who have lost a loved one.

REMEMBER ONE ON ONE FOR LAME SUPERVISION OF AMEs

So you'd prefer a one on one bang up the bum when held criminally negligent!
Outcomes like this should help good business structure and real LAME's. It makes the rogue's that don't Supervise and Certify correctly think twice! :ok:

If you cannot afford to pay for maintenance to be done properly, you can not afford to be in the industy.

It is a shame that yet another life has been lost to make the point.

yeah well we all have heard stories over the years about sub standard maint as we have heard about sub std pilots. This industry like all others that require the 'tool's of the trade to be maintained will never be perfect.

In a perfect world we would have planes that never faulted.
In a perfect world we would have pilots who would never stuff up.
In a perfect world we would have engineers who could fix a plane perfectly with just a spoon.
In a perfect world we would have managers who where human.

In a perfect world we wouldn't even need this forum, but we don't live in a perfect world now do we? so we make do in the "REAL" world
:bored:

So where in the culpability stakes does that leave the all singing all dancing "Regulatory Authority" that supposably 'supervises' the LAME's ?

No, not correct. You need a screwdriver. You can fix the world with a screwdriver.

This is also the case in Australia, LAMEs can be convicted of manslaughter over things like this, thankfully it doesn't happen very often.

Not sure about New Zealand, but certainly in Australia, CASA are NOT liable in any way, they delegate the responsibility to the LAME.

MacGyver Work at your place too? :ok:
I have always found if you couldn't fix it with a bit of lockwire then you hadn't used enough. :E:rolleyes:

How do the airline guys do it? I thought they just had a crap load of AMEs and 1 LAME signing all the paperwork? Real question, not trying to stir the pot.

'cap'n Arrr, now that's a classic :D

We rely on LAME's (Obviously) & we put not only our faith but our lives in their hands.

LAME = Legal Always, Mechanically Ethical
