Just heard on the TV news a report that Southwest Airlines will hire 4,000 new employees in 2002. No other info available. With their low staff to Pilot ratio I would expect that there will be some 73X jobs available in that 4,000. Good News for American commercial aviation. -dAAvid
edited to add: Local DFW/DAL TV news reports up to 250 pilots slots and 1200 +/- cabin crew slots in the 4K number. -dAAvid

Dont worry guys <img src="wink.gif" border="0"> . This is how I see it, this year, few people went traveling by a/c. Next year there'll be a sudden burst of demand for travel for people will start forgetting about Sep. 11 2001. I know I sound stupid but it's true, it always happens like that!
Is Southwest Airlines based in Pheonix? Also American West?. .It looks like Phoenix Skyharbour Int is quite a busy airport, can anyone give me further info re the operators based there or Tuson? . .Are the many charter companies, flying schools etc... any info greatly appreciated

Southwest is headquartered in Dallas, Texas (Love Field--get it? That's why all the planes have little hearts on them.)
They do have quite the hub in Phoenix however, where they go head to head with America West (which is, in fact, headquartered in PHX).
America West also has a large hub in Las Vegas.
No major airline is HQd in Tucson.
Yes there are a lot of charter outfits and flight schools.
Southwest has 3 mains hubs, their home base and then BWI and LAX. WN took over the entire C terminal at BWI a year or so ago and also doubled the peir size. Now WN is taking over D (UA is moving to old US (PI) gates as US has all about abandoned ship at BWI.
WN is the wallmart of airlines, but they are not the KMart of airlines, that is left for Ryan air. I do shop at Wallmart as the people are friendly, the store is clean and the prices are far better for the same product. Since DL has donwgraded thier coach service to a level lower then WN, I find WN to be a pleasure to fly compared to cramped DL coach. GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY and they are a safe airlines as far as I can tell. Their FF program is great although I wish they would expand to do some T/A flights.

What a compliment, Walmart are the worlds most sucessful retailer therefore by inference Southwest are the worlds most sucessful airline. I would kind of agree with that on many levels.

Just to tidy up some info. SWA is a point to point airlines - there are no hubs. There are, however, 7 pilot domiciles. Phoenix, Oakland, Dallas (LUV), Houston (Hobby), Chicago (MDW), BWI, and MCO. We have large operations out of LAX and LAS, but, they are not domiciles. Phoenix is the largest domicile and therefore has the largest operations. Dallas is the system HQ domicile, the smallest, and the most senior. MCO just opened this past year and is set for expansion. There has been talk of opening LAS as a domicile since we normally have to buy 250 hotel rooms a night for aircrew, however, 9/11 has changed the expansion priorities for the company and there is no news on when it may happen (if at all).

Busterb: Thanks for update On Southwest. I remember the days when the carrier was intrastate (Texas) and when stews wore orange hotpants. :cool:

Ah yes, those hip hugging hotpants with the vinyl boots and the clingy sweaters - if I remember rightly. A VERY PLEASANT SIGHT for tired eyes indeed! :D
Did not fly the very first flt to SAT rather flew the very first flt to HOU that AM and got a small plaque for my troubles (none actually after I saw the hosties!). Passed out those heart shaped "valentines" candies at the end of the flt as an expression of their "love" for the pax. Brilliant marketing on the part of SWA ever since. - dAAvid
I'm impressed probably the only airline still succesful enough to be hiring. I am impressed with that airline. I was just wondering what positions are they going to be filling?

Skywest Airlines (a united express carrier on the west coast) has also been hiring. A couple of my friends started there over Christmas. 1000 hrs min. I think their secret is that they have been picking up the routes abandoned by United Shuttle.
they may still be taking pilot applications, but unless SWA sees demand pick up, all pilots are hired until at least November.:eek:
