If you know anyone who would like to become a professional pilot or to add to existing pilot qualifications, and needs financial assistance, you might want to tell them about the Scholarships and bursaries offered by the Guild of Air Pilots.
Several PPL Scholarships (fixed wing) and a few FI(R) Scholarships (fixed wing & rotary) and other awards/bursaries are available for 2008.
The closing date for most Scholarships is Wednesday 9th April 2008.
Closing dates for awards/bursaries vary.

2009 'J N Somers' Scholarship
This Scholarship is for a fully-funded frozen ATPL/ IR,
and includes a JOC/MCC module
Mrs Phylis Somers generously instigated the scholarship in 1999 in memory of her late husband, J N ‘Nat’ Somers, who was a Test Pilot and a member of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators from 1946.
The selection process will be carried out this year, and the lucky winner will begin training in Spring 2009.
Closing date for receipt of applications is the 13th June 2008.

Although, there have been mornings when I've had mixed views about enjoying Rick's 'hugely good company' the night before - ranging from 'Why didn't I leave sooner?' to 'Never again!'

RP-E was one of my "staishes" at Leeming - nice chap, although we never forgave him for having the summer ball held in the first week in May so that he could attend before moving off to his next job. Food, wine, dancing and frostbite!

Now then, what would he have to say about this....
I spent two years strapping RPE into a lightning at RAF Coltishall back in 71/72 wishing I could be in his shoes. One day I expressed my feelings to him and he replied that I should get on with it by whatever means I could. I did and many years later as an Upper Freeman of the Guild always have a smile when I read snippets of info regarding RPE. Little does he know that his words that day would prompt me to learn to fly, become an Instructor (Rotary and Fixed Wing) become an FAA Examiner, personal pilot to the President of xxxxx and now a Captain for the Royal Flight in xxxxx xxxxxx. Small world but amazing what a few small words can do. One day I will get to meet him again and thank him.
Some folks get away with anything these days!...

How much is the annual membership these days? I was a member a few years ago, but the £100+ per year fee put me off.

Well I often wondered what Rick got up to. Now I know. I flew with him a couple of times when he was a QFI at RAF Valley and I was a spotty stude. A scholar and a gentleman. :ok:

I think RP-E is trying to increase the military element of GAPAN too ......... professional pilots (includes all military) would join as Upper Freemen, and could in due course also be admitted to the Livery...
It's an amazing networking organisation, and the dinners are great too!

Me too......just the once. T'was the best thing that ever happen to me in the RAF.

My next flight was at Roborough, ahead of a 30 year career with the FAA!

Nice outfit RPE! Not sure it would have been appreciated in the bar at Gutersloh but you never know!! Just hope GAPAN has a large beer fund!
