A flight crew has thwarted a terrorist act on board a jet in China, officials say.
China Southern plane was involved

The China Southern flight was forced to make an emergency landing after an attempt to "cause an air disaster", the governor of Xinjiang said.

The Beijing-bound plane came down in Lanzhou, capital of the northwestern province of Gansu, after taking off from Urumqi, Xinjiang's capital, last Friday.

An anonymous source said flammable material had been discovered in the plane's toilet.

However, crew members intervened before any damage could be caused.

At least two passengers have been taken into custody for questioning.

Xinjiang is home to some eight million Muslim Uighurs, many of whom resent the growing presence and economic grip of Han Chinese.

Some have agitated for an independent "East Turkestan".

A senior Chinese official has warned that Uighurs - a largely Islamic people who share linguistic and cultural bonds with Central Asia - were plotting attacks on the Beijing Olympics.

Two militants were killed and 15 arrested in Urumqi on January 27.

Five police officers were wounded when three home-made grenades were thrown at them during the incident.

The gang had planned an attack targeting the Games, the Xinhua news agency reported Wang Lequan, who heads the Xinjiang region Communist Party, as saying.

"Those terrorists, saboteurs and secessionists are to be battered resolutely, no matter what ethnic group they are from," Mr Wang said.

what was the flamable liquid? a can of coke? after getting under some international pressure before the olympics for human rights reaons, they have to come up with some storys like this.
do not forget that they are in the top ranks of killing people for changing the system, chairman mao's cultural revolution cost the life of about 30 million of his people, just a bit short of stalin and hitler but still 3rd place in world history!!

Mach 84

And what's your proof that no such thing happened, or that it was a can of coke?

Just because it involved a Chinese airline invokes this response from you? Now please enlighten us on your thoughts about a frenchman trying to light his shoe lace on a flight to the US? Or some guys carrying too much toothpaste or shaving cream?

It's definitely all a bit fishy. Only wire copy, no on-site reports, no contemporary accounts and personal experience in China lead me to the conclusion that this is all standard Macchiavellian Chinese behavior designed to excuse the pre-Olympic crackdown.

"already 2 years ago they made some fuzz about my sons drink in his bottle, he was 8 months by then,"

Have no specifics other than what you have described; your 8-month son was not the problem - clearly they probably suspected YOU! No offense meant, but with the mid-east situation and all that muslim suicide attacks, it is obvious that "those" kinds would be happy to sacrifice their own offspring in their warped minds. Somehow perhaps they thought of you in the same light

"china is a nice country, but if you dig in a bit, not evrything is really as nice as they would like to present it to you. so ofcorse before the olympics they try to be perfect. "

That describes pretty much a lot of other countries as well. Nevertheless it detracts from the fact that as of the present there is nothing to suggest that this "terrorist" act was in fact staged, as you and someone else seems to suggest. Lets hear the evidence

I'm with Mach 84 on this one.

It wasn't even a flammable liquid, it was flammable material!! So someone had some sheets of paper in the toilet!! Damn we're all terrorists!

An equal result could have been achieved then with a good curry followed by a night of heavy drinking. :}

Reportedly, there was a recent attempt to deliberately crash a China Southern Airlines flight. The crew foiled the attempt. Not much else in the story (http://origin.mercurynews.com/ci_8511961).

Anybody seen any more on this?

why people always stick on Mao's mistake? China is as same as other countries today, you really want to destroy this country because the mistake made by a past man? furthermore Mao is a revolutionist, revolution MUST HAVE PEOPLE DIE! Otherwise it's not revolution, even the US can't change this rule. dark people in US doesn't have the rights to vote until 70s, do u know how many dark people died because they fight for this?
