A Citation 500 series crashed just after takeoff about a mile south of its departure airport, Wiley Post Airport (KPWA) located in Northwest Oklahoma City. From the live video feed it appears that the aircraft impacted vertically. One confirmed fatality. (And to be honest after seeing the remains no one on-board could have survived.)

The weather is clear, light winds temperature around 10c/50f.

The media has just released the name of the company that owns the aircraft. It is locally based and I do know the pilots that fly for the company.

I realize that this thread will soon be placed in the Biz-Jet forum, however, would the moderators please allow the thread to remain here for a while.

Thank you.

Con, that's rough! :(

A link to the live video feeds? So the great and the good can postulate on the causes?

RIP to the "missing man"

Light plane down near Wiley Post Airport in Oklahoma City

KTEN Local News

Associated Press - March 4, 2008 5:15 PM ET

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A small jet airplane crashed in a wooded area this afternoon near Wiley Post Airport in northwest Oklahoma City.

A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said preliminary indications were that one person was killed.

The Cessna 500 crashed about 3:15 p.m. News video from the scene showed a small fire and the charred wreckage.

FAA spokesman Roland Herwig said the twin-engine aircraft was traveling from Wiley Post airport to Mankato, Minnesota, when it crashed about five miles southwest of the airport.

The aircraft was registered to Southwest Orthopedic Sports Medicine Clinic in Oklahoma City.

Greg Horton, an eyewitness who was fishing in Lake Overholser, told Oklahoma City television station KWTV that he saw the airplane crash and saw a fireball.

He said he saw a flock of birds in the area about the time of the crash and thought this may have contributed to the accident.

The Cessna 500 business jet can hold two pilots and at least five passengers.

Local Police statement, there are two crash scenes, quarter mile apart, from one aircraft.

Witnesses state, a piece of the aircraft fell off, starting a grass fire on impact.

The aircraft continued, impacting the ground a quarter mile from the first scene.

Only comment on the cause I will make is that there was a lot of bird activity here today. Migration time.

I am only going to confirm what the news has already stated, as I am unable to disclose further details. The accident aircraft is N113SH, a Citation I based at Wiley Post Airport. The accident appears to have occurred due to ingestion and strikes by numerous birds. At this time, there is only one confirmed fatality which appears to be the pilot. This man is a well respected member of the aviation community, well known at the airport, and all around very nice guy. He will be dearly missed.

My thoughts and prayers to his family and other friends, as well as anyone involved in this tragic occurrence.

This is the second tragedy at this airport within three months. In early January a Line Service Technician was killed when he was struck by a propeller. It is known that it was an accident, but further details are unknown simply because nobody, including the pilot, saw the accident happen. Therefore, nobody knows exactly what happened and, unfortunately, some have put their own spin on the story.

This is truly a sad year for myself, and our brothers and sisters in aviation at Wiley Post Airport.

An unfortunate turn of phrase in this tragedy
