Co-pilot (Michael Warren) dies during plane flight

A flight from Manchester to Cyprus was forced to divert to Turkey after the co-pilot died during the journey.

First Officer Michael Warren, 43, was taken ill during a GB Airways flight to Paphos on Sunday afternoon.

The Airbus A320, with 156 passengers on board, was re-routed to Istanbul where travellers spent the night.

A spokeswoman for GB Airways, which is a franchise partner of British Airways, said that at no time were the passengers and crew in any danger.

Mr Warren, a father-two, was given first aid by the aeroplane's purser, but was pronounced dead by the Turkish authorities on arrival in Istanbul.

The spokeswoman said: "The flight, with 156 passengers and six crew members, left Manchester on time at 1420 on Sunday, 24th February.

"Michael became ill during the flight. The purser administered first aid while the captain diverted the aircraft to Istanbul, where it landed at 1945 local time.

"Paramedics attended the aircraft immediately. Sadly, Michael was pronounced dead by the Turkish authorities.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with his wife and family following this tragic news."

Mr Warren, a former RAF pilot, joined GB Airways in August 2005.

Passengers were told of a medical emergency on the flight deck upon touch down in Istanbul and spent the night in the city.

They are expected to be flown to Cyprus later.

I hate to confirm the worst this was Sqn Ldr Mike Warren RAF (Rtd).

Formerly of Laarbruch, Marham, TLP staff and latterly RAF Woodvale. A sad loss to all of us who knew him both in the Air Force and at GB Airways.

Spent a couple of years on 16, and out in Tabuk in his company.

He always had time for everyone, and I'm shocked he's went so soon.

I was a QFI at Woodvale with Mike Warren and he was a splendid professional pilot and QFI. The students liked him and looked up to him, rightly so, and he gave them a great start in their flying and professional careers. Remembered and missed by many - RIP.

Very sad news and condolences to Lisa and the family. Mike was a true inspiration many a year ago and I'll never forget the black flag days at Woodvale spent watching his Boys from Bahrain video.

This is truly awful news.

Mike was always, and will always be 'Mook Wirren, pregrommar' to me, for reasons that those in and around the PBF of II(AC)Sqn at the time will remember. A genuinely lovely bloke.

It was my privilege to have served on the TLP staff with 'Mook'. He was a true professional, a fine officer, a great ambassador, a good mate and a very proud Dad. Thoughts and prayers are with Lisa and the children.

I knew and worked with Mike, albeit briefly, during his first tour with MASUAS.
A fine pilot and lovely smiley character who gave patient attention to his studes, and encouraged several towards RAF careers. RIP Mike. Another good man who has passed on far too soon. My condolences to Lisa and the family.

So sad. I was on one of his flights quite recently and bantered a bit with him when he was in the galley getting a tea or coffee and I was getting something a bit stronger. I asked him a couple of questions about the flight and he couldn't have been nicer or more courteous and complete in his replies.

I was fortunate to become good friends with Mike and Lisa whilst serving on II (AC) Sqn and as their neighbour, and have remained so to see their family grow whilst enjoying life outside of the RAF.

I was shocked to find out this news. Mike was such a lovely bloke. I had the privilege to work with him as Mook on II(AC) under Garfield. I am so glad we all made the most of that time together. Heartfelt condolences to poor Lisa and the rest of his family.
