PPL/engineers-maintaining you're own...

this is a question for those of you who enjoy private flying... As qualified engineers are you allowed to certify and maintain you're own private aircraft? ifso, this must make owning you're own aircraft alot cheaper!

Just wondering as if this is the case (i wouldnt know, im a wannabe engineer) this must be a great advantage as it seems buying a single engine aircraft isnt too expensive. its the maintanence thats the killer.

If you are licensed to carry out work on said machine then you can, even if you own it - so yes it is potentially a lot cheaper!

PFA (now LAA) Permit aircraft maintenance cannot be signed for by a LAA inspector who owns said machine unless he is a CAA licenced engineer as well (and I'm not sure but it might have to be within the qualifications of his CAA licence - ie metal or wood etc). Build stages of a new machine would have to be signed off by an independent inspector.

It used to be the case that BMAA Inspectors couldn't sign for any microlight that they have monetary interest in.

Labour cost for first two years £140 for radio annuals.

Third year £350 for c of a and £100 for radio annual and compass swing.

Allowing for inflation thats been more or less the story over 14 years.

Also you get to buy your spares from whoever you choose without the middleman mark up.
