Video tape to disc. How's it done?

How does one transfer standard video tape items from their original tapes to CDs? it won't be long before VHS systems disappear altogether and the information on those tapes will become non-recoverable. How do I transfer the stuff I want to keep from the tapes to CDs? What do I need, and how is it all done? I want to be able to do some editing, especially with the old "home video" stuff too.

Please remember I'm a complete techno retard :( and your answers in words of one syllable or less would be appreciated.

By far the simplest way is with a VHS/DVD combo recorder. Not sure about the editing abilities though. To do that well would involve copying to a PC, using editing software, and then "Burning" to a DVD. Probably not for a Non Techy like yourself!
