Hi all,

I have the Cathay B747-200 sim check coming up in Hong Kong. I was wondering if there is anyone who has done it recently?

What can you expect etc?

Thank you very much for you help.

Regards

Jon.

Normal take-off
Steep turn, reverse the turn
Rapid deceleration from 300 kts to 210 kts
Intercept ILS
Go-Around at minimums
Second approach
Landing

Second ILS is one eng-out if you're going for F/O

Trim-trim-trim, and that shouldn't be a problem :)

Thanks for the the info.

I am going for F/O. What is the deal with QRH, recall items etc when you get the engine failure?

Or do they ignore that?

Thanks.

just call for it, the way you do it in your airline.

Just had the Sim a week ago in Hong Kong.

-T/O and track the back course beam.
-Right hand turn at 10 DME for air work.
-Steep Turns. 30, 45 and 60 degrees bank. 180 degrees in each direction.
-Accelerate to 300 kts. Then Decelerate to 220 kts. (using spoilers)
-ILS to a go around. (Runway heading)
-Vector around for another ILS.
-#1 engine fire on downwind. (Ask for recall items. He will go through them)
-Full Stop landing. (Using asymmetric thrust reverse)

I find the Sim is not very responsive. It lags in the turn and a reduction in power will not show on the A/S indicator until about 5 seconds. My only advice is fly the vectors for the ILS at flaps 5. When you are established inbound ask for flaps 10. Then at G/S alive and Vref+20 call Flaps 20 etc.

Cathay Pacific study guide has some good pointers near the back. Though easier said than done.

Good Luck.

Is Keith Griffen a great guy or what? He's funny as H@ll and gives a very fair assessment . . . If you are lucky enough to meet him during your sim eval, pay attention, he has a lot of good stuff to say.

I live half of my pilot life training people in 747-200 simulators...
Steep turns are performed at 45º bank and 280 KIAS.
Anywhere in the world in 747 simulators... No 60º bank...
Unless CX is qualified for acrobatics...
Including with Air Mickey Mouse at Disney World Airlines and others.

To perform such 280/45º steep turn - establish steady level flight at 280.
Bank the sim SLOWLY, and DO NOT USE PITCH TRIM for this maneuver.
Upon passing through 30º bank, increase pitch 1 dot above 5º pitch.
At the same time, increase power 1/2 knob.
Accurate speed control better maintained with Mach number indicator, not KIAS.
Fine tune speed adjustement 1/2 knob with the INBOARD engines only.
Ask PNF to give you a call 20º heading prior to completion of 180º heading change.
To do the turn in the opposite direction, DO NOT STOP at LVL flight.
Continue your change of turn direction/bank WITHOUT power changes.
It is easier to go from one direction to the other immediately.
xxx
ILS, at glide slope alive, call for gear down, then at 3 greens, call flaps 25.
Fly the glide slope with brief "clicks" on the pitch trim.
Again, fine tune of Vref speed using small INBOARD engine power corrections.
If getting too slow, slight power increase on ALL engines, then back, 2 seconds later.
xxx
Good luck to you - You owe me a San Miguel, or Tsin Tao.

CX does the 60 degree bank in the eval just to see how you handle getting the shaker. Just recover and all is well.

Thanks rjmore -

Never heard that one...
We do stick shaker games with the stall series.
The clean one, then departure 20º bank 10 Flaps, then gear down 25 flaps...
Never thought about using excessive bank angle to do recoveries.
As we get the "BANK ANGLE" barking at us in the sim...
OK... Why not 60º then, you are right.

I don't remember having had the stick shaker.
And I don't think it's the goal.
If you are smooth with the controls, you shouldn't have it.
Else, how would you do your two 180 turns?

Some guys get it and some don't, like you say it could be a smoothness factor. I didn't get the shaker but got a slight buffet, which I recovered from. About 75% of the guys in my group did get the shaker. Some got a bit of a buffet and some didn't get anything. The ones that got it seemed to have similar stories of getting a bit high then over correcting in the level off.

As for the two turns, I did them but the first turn didn't have the 60 degree bank. I did a continuous turn increasing the bank the other direction in increments 30, 45, 60.

I must have done something right since I've been with the company 9 months now.

RJMORE....

hi there, you say that u have been with Cathay for >9 months now... how you find it?

I have my final sim in Hong Kong end May... (SO)

Did they fly you out there the day before?

Any pointers in preparation?? I'm thinking about using a sim here in UK, all my experience so far is on a Q400.

Cheers

I'm happy here so far. The company has its issues but no worse than anywhere else I've worked.

They will work out with you when to come out. I went the day before and got a good nights rest. Some guys went out two days before. You can choose to stay a couple extra days if you want at your own expense, otherwise you go home either the night after your final interview or the next day.

Good luck!

G'day
How are ya ?

I was just going throught the post and was trying to find out the required power setting for 747-200 Sim for CX . I read one of your post and i was wondering if you have any numbers for flying b747-200 for normal(30) and steep turns(45) like power setting/attitude and airspeed .

also during one engine shut down what are the power setting and attitude
I am one of those guys who love flying by numbers and i have not have any previous experience on the jet yet .i thought i would seek some advice on this .

any help would be much appreciated

cheers
