Is this the right thing?

Either way, there's quite a few on there.

You may want to try telephoning the supply store at Cranditz. I bought one from them a year ago as they were clearing out 100s of them then. Another 20 pounds to re-taylor it at Snaiths and I was all sorted out...

Never worn it since though! PM me with a price...

Ideal for those Torchwood re-enactments in the Range Rover!

Is Ernie Bedford, military tailor and gentlemen's outfitter of Newark, still bumping around? I snapped up a greatcoat from him, cheap as chips, yonks ago. You see them occasionally in the back of the RAF News too!

Sadly no. Can't imagine how old he would be if he was. Well into 3 figures I imagine.

A sad loss. My first experience of a proper gentlemen's tailor - I remember being completely bewildered by such hitherto alien concepts as courtesy and service!

If there are any more for a 5'9", 44" chest, then I'll be interested! Bugger, wish I'd thought of this thread (every pun intended) first.

I bought my first mess kit from Ernie Bedford back in 1969 when flying training at Syerston. Sometime around 1982 I went back and bought another one from him. (The first one seemed to have shrunk - especially round the waist). Anyway, I asked him if he gave discount to regular customers. ..He had the good grace to smile at my joke.

Or 5' 11" and 46 - 48" chest?

Are we still allowed to wear, was it, the Crombie Warm? Not quite as long as the great coat, no belt and IMHO slightly smarter than the GC.

I bought my first mess kit from Ernie Bedford back in 1969 when flying training at Syerston. ... we must have been there at about the same time - that's where and when I bought my first one too. The label inside said "RE City 1958" and it was in regular use until '99, when I finally got a mortgage for a new one! Still fits (-ish) and occasionally gets use if it looks like the going will be rough! (the jacket that is - trousers and waiscoat(s) died many years since.......:()

Wore mine once in 16 years. Took about a fortnight before my shoulders got level again.

I still have mine made by R E City Ltd of London. It also has a label saying it is a Crombie made to Air Ministry Standard. I rarely wore it because for most of my life it has weighed more than me.

Looking for one for someone 6ft3 and 48in chest (me). Needs to be officer pattern as will be worn as uniform.

Apparently the current uniform regs allow for it to be worn with No 1, 2 or 5 dress but only issued on loan for ceremonial occasions.

Any ideas? e-bay usually poor for these, especially when you combine the size and rank. Most are NCO design and flogged to Torchwood fans!

AIDU

I would agree with you about him wearing a Gp Capt's coat (or at least a coat ranked to G/C) but most of the ones on e-bay claiming to be Torchwood coats have Albatrosses on the sleeve, a suspicious sign of non-officer design!

I have never watched Torchwood (not my sort of thing) but it seems to have significantly affected the availability and price of second hand greatcoats!

this fits like a medium, but check the measurements if you're uncertain..
the model is a 34" chest, 6ft tall and weighs 11st (70kg/154lb)..

:ugh:

posted it as others might be interested, though the model is smaller than the size, check out pic above from the sale. I PM'd him a link to what he was after.

There's one just been donated (last Tuesday) to HQ Thames Valley Wing ATC at Abingdon. Probably slimmer than 42" but I could just about get into it last week even at my advanced age and waistline. Had to get rid of it; the present Mrs ARCHIE1 was clearing the house ready for the decorators. One owner for 45 years; good as new; much sentimental value. An enquiry may find it still in the front office.

Eventually bought one off eBay but it is smaller than I had anticipated (or I am larger than I thought!). Also much older than I expected. Has King's Crown buttons and seems about a 40-42 inch chest size. Will probably put it back on eBay as should make more than I paid for it as it had been listed in the wrong place but if anyone wants to make me a sensible offer...

I must admit I'm having a bit of an issue trying to locate a good condition greatcoat myself. I'm 6 feet tall and a 46" chest... if anyone wishes to let me know if they have one, or know of the whereabouts of one, and would be willing to sell it to me (a serving RAF Officer) I would be most grateful...

Chaps

A greatcoat has finally come into my possession :) The coat fits across my shoulders but having been acquired from a slightly more, ahem, portly gentlemen :E is too big around the middle. Has anyone had any experience of having one of these coats tailored? And would you recommend the tailor?

And I have an R E City British Warm Crombie overcoat (ranked to Flt Lt) for sale. Chest size around 40-42", would suit height 5'10/11.

PM if interested, otherwise it goes on eBay!

Is fleabay the only way to recycle military uniforms? With so many of us expecting to leave soon you'd think there'd be a demand for a uniform recycling website.

Roland, I had a greatcoat cut down to a British Warm. Very successful. As you want the GC taken in there should be no problem with fading or anything. As the cloth is so thick any stiching is soon hidden.

Any good tailor should be able to do it £££

The Safety Equipment Section at Stradishall would turn a Crombie greatcoat into a British Warm for a fiver. At least it did in 1969. It still fits so I think I will keep it.

Hi,

I am not the original thread creator but am wondering if you still have the 40" greatcoat. If so could you let me know the other measurements and how much you would like for it.

Regards,

Tom.

We still have Staxton Wold, wow, I would have thought that would have gone long ago. Maybe it has been overlooked and is out in the cold, hence the need for a greatcoat?

Hi Guys,

I have a 40" by 5' 10" greatcoat obtained at Henlow 1971. It has Flt Lt ranks markings on it. As I am no longer on the reserve I would be please to see it return to service in exchange for a few beer vouchers. PM me if you are interested.

I'd like one, but have always found them slightly comical. I can't help thinking of Captain Mainwaring whenever I hear mention of greatcoats.

I think I recently saw Elton John wearing one, wasn't his Dad in the RAF?
I know he was selling off all of his old clobber, give him a call and make an offer.

It is?? YGBSM, Roly old chum! Maybe you need to scoff a few more DFMBs up there in darkest Jockistan?

Good to note that I'm not the only one who obviously doesn't believe in the greenwash of the global warmists!

I never thought I would, but I fancy one for the winter. Saw a chap in one at Brize a couple of weeks ago during the cold snap, and it looked like a much better bet than the GPJ with "I've eaten too many pies" liner!
