CPL with Coprolalia , Need help!!

G’day all Happy Australia day J

I am an Engineer that’s been working in GA for some years now. Flying has always been a boyhood dream but I suffer from a mild form of Coprolalia the rarer form of Tourette’s. This has stopped me from chasing the dream of flying as a career. Its nice to work in aviation but I really want to become a driver in one of those shiny birds

Coprolalia is involuntary swearing or the involuntary utterance of obscene words or socially inappropriate and derogatory remarks. Coprolalia comes from the Greek κόπρος meaning "feces" and λαλία meaning "babbling, meaningless talk", from lalein, "to talk". The term is often used as a clinomorphism, with 'compulsive profanity' inaccurately referred to as being Tourette syndrome.




As a child my outbursts where uncontrollable but with age and therapy I lead a fairly normal life. Mostly I can cover up an outburst in the hangar by faking that I bruised my knuckles or hit my fingers whilst working.

My condition is brought on by stressful situations and that includes just learning to fly. I worry if I start down the path of a CPL that I will have uncontrollable outbursts to passengers and during radio operations. I already have nightmares about addressing crew and passengers over the intercom. I have passed my medical as Coprolalia officially doesn’t affect my ability to fly but does seem unprecedented in Australian aviation circles

So what should my next step be? Would it be possible to get some sort of dispensation from ATC or CASA for my use of involuntary profanity?Maybe theres other avenues of a flying career I havent explored yet.

Just need some support from you guys and any suggestions to make my dream come true :}

Sounds like you would qualify for a position as Kerry Provis's replacement at Air North.

Perhaps taking steps to alleviate the trigger (reducing stress) will mean you go unnoticed by fellow pilots!:ok:

Failing that, perhaps a career in Ag flying where you don't talk a lot on the radio and swearing is an accepted from of communication!;)

Interesting post. I wouldn't mind betting a lot of people pilots included may suffer from this insidious ailment even in a minor form.
We`all suffer stress, that's human nature given our fast & furious world we live in but it's obviously how we handle it. Learning to fly with that dissfunction would obviously be a challenge & would be somewhat dependant on where/whom was doing the teaching. You obviously can hold a professional job & have gained more knowledge about yourself than most in here. Commercial flying may be yr limiting factor but private should be achievable given the right understanding from the flying community.
I wish you well, you obviously have the determintaion to do/try it even by asking here where some can be ruthless !

On that alone, I'd suggest you'd be very well qualified to work at any aeroclub in Australia :).

Seeing that stressfull situations trigger your condition that would possibly be disastrous in emergency situations.Which is when you need to be 100% switched on and calm so I'd say that an airline career and charter would be most likely out of sights but as mentioned, Ag flying or something similar may be possible.All the best to ya

I just considered that if youre flying Ag then youre basicly halfway on a landing to put the thing on the ground and if youre and instructor then you have the student to take care of it(pretend like it's good for his expirience).Jokes aside, I was refering to sectors that are more related to the public or that endangered more lifes then your own.:ok:

How about a Top End Aboriginal Community posting in a 206? The pax wouldn't be bothered in the slightest about any possible outbursts. You would fit in well.

Maybe a S/O slot with the White Rat? I hear they are preparing them for F/A duties, you would be a great help to the Cabin Crew when dealing with the SLF.:E

Have you considered a career as an ATC'er? You may be just the person ASA are looking for to fill the Perth slot, especially on those busy mornings!
