Hi All
I have a friend who is just besotted with aircraft but due to various reasons , mainly financial constraints he cannot afford to fly. Humble soul , very eager with great ability. Are there still companies in Europe who have load master positions and how would someone like him proceed. Are there courses , available or is it done in house etc etc. Would appreciate any steers in the right direction. All he wants to do is work around airplanes.

That question has been raised several times on these pages - the search function might be helpful.

The short answer, however, is that there's little to no chance of getting straight from the street to a loadie job. Starting at the beginning with a ground job, moving on to load controlling and staying connected with the right people and the right time might work. But there are plenty of very experienced loadies kicking about, so for newcomer the competition is very stiff indeed.

Not trying to rain on your parade here, but your mate is not exactly looking for the most frequently advertised job in aviation! Don't know if he got the legs for it, but have you suggested cabin crew instead? Much bigger intake of those, if flying is really his gig, and he can't/won't dole out for a license to drive the kites.

A few years ago the DHL 757's(?) that flew into Lagos from Brussels used to have Air Loadmaster's as flying crew, seemed like a nice job. Mostly British and Belgian chaps. As I recall the Loadmasters earned more than the F/O's, dunno if its still the same nowdays.

One could also try the military route, all military operators of c 130 and similar type aircraft fly with at least 2 Loadies. Also saw RAF Chinnook's with Loadies/Gunners .

Could try Safair for c130 positions if willing to fly on a contract basis or try any other c130 civilian operator.
