Anyone get any pictures or video of the AN-124 at Woodford today?

Performed a flight from RAF Waddington in Lincs (20 minute flight!) with a Nimrod fuselage.

Would be interested to see how easily it stopped on arrival, and how much tarmac it used up upon it's departure to EMA.

I know they've been into Woodford in the past on similar missions, but it does seem a horrendously expensive thing to do. I assume road was not an option.

Saw the big beast on short finals, from about 2 miles away, and listened. Only about 10 secs of full reverse heard, so I presume Woodford's nice long runway suited the Antonov. Very impressive sight!

I know the plods closed the local A road so it could come in nice 'n low!

I suppose that is the monthly movement for Woodford :E

Shame i was in school

Really good pictures on UKAR, you don't have to join to view. In the military photography section.

Just to let you all know..............

Professional Video of the AN124 at Woodford on 19/12/07 will be uploaded to FL350.com soon, actual footage shot in HD 1080i so we had to down convert it to fit it on .

Footage is from two cameras positioned at the top and the end of the runway.

Hope you enjoy......Merry Christmas to all..

Superb footage, the head on view is so unusual, showing the flexing of the wing and veering under braking (i presume that whats causing it), the ATC dubbing makes it a special bit of history, probably never to be repeated.

Thanks for the comments guys, thought you'd enjoy it.

I looked on the FL350 site this morning and its approaching 11000 views and only came viewable on at 23.55 on 24/12/07 so I think Simon and myself had better come up with a sequel soon:)

Seriously though it took a lot of planning and a few contacts to keep us on the trail. Police were shutting footpaths and roads for jetblast reasons so Simon had to be on the right side of the cordon and I had to come up with a plan to stay at the east end of the runway on the perimeter footpath.... the natural ledge on the edge of the river was my shelter point although there was nothing more than a slight breeze as the aircraft did the 180 degree turn. I explained my plan to the constable who was happy to let me stay there but closed the path to anyone else.

The setup was that Simon was to film the approach, landing , unload and takeoff and I would film the head on landing to give a different aspect from the normal views..

Simon and myself actually shot the whole film in HD 1080i, Simon used a Cannon XH A1 i think and I used a Sony HDR-CX6 and burnt a memorystick image with the stream data and dropped it off for him to put into Sony Vegas 7 and there you have it.

cheers Ian

Fantastic video, I wondered what the landing looked like from the outside - I was on the 124, you have captured a piece of history as that is most likely the last time we will use the An124 for this type of move. Sorry for the late post but I have just been sent a link to this thread by someone at work.

This was the 9th such flight with an MR2P onboard - I enjoyed every one of them. As for the question about road haulage, the road networks around both Waddington and Woodford are far from conducive to a move like this - too restrictive and there is a viable alternate so the DoT could easily reject the wide/ unusual load permit - Mike
