Some personal comments on the “ new vision”
FROM: Daily news 12 Dec.

One of the key themes at Tuesday’s management conference was the importance of listening – listening to staff, to customers and also managers making the effort to listen to each other. And there was certainly a lot of listening going on as a packed audience was taken through a programme that, ………………

Amazing, Listening to staff???? On Monday when the staff tried to talk to Mr. Pratt, did he not send his little puppet to collect the memorandum, which was appropriately wrapped in gift paper, as it was his birthday?

Chief Executive Tony Tyler got proceedings under way and thanked everyone for their efforts in what has been a very strong year. Listing all the year’s achievements – from the introduction of PROS through to new aircraft orders, the introduction of the new long-haul product and the increased synergies with Dragonair – Tony said that a great deal had been done while ensuring the airline continued to be safe, reliable and profitable.

And the reward to staff was???“It’s been a fantastic year, and I’d like to thank everyone in the company for their continued hard work and dedication to the cause,” he said. “Being a great airline is not achieved by luck. We have a lot of good things working in our favour – including superb frontline staff, technical expertise, aircraft, network ( see previous question ) and a great management team ( they can’t run a bath, it is bad local employment acts, no labour laws, and the geographic location of Hong Kong that make you look good)– and everything we’ve achieved is the result of hard work and determination.”

A group of general managers gave eight short presentations on “Moving Forward: Faster, Cheaper and Better”, throwing some off-the-wall suggestions into the mix, while Augustus Tang ( don’t know him, maybe our Dragon friends can comment) hereoutlined the whys and wherefores of the current strategy review. Former CX Managing Director Sir Rod Eddington rounded off the afternoon session with his thoughts on where the industry is heading in the next eight years – with a few flashes back to his Hong Kong past.

Chairman Chris Pratt brought proceedings to a close, saying he was pleased to see the beginning of a two-way dialogue in the airline. (Yeah right) CX, he said, exceeded expectations in 2007, and thanked everyone for a great effort – particularly frontline staff who bore the brunt of high loads and an airline running at full capacity.

He highlighted the many things that work to CX’s advantage including its geographical location. ( There he said it , even I could work that one out seven years ago) “Our position at the heart of China’s aviation map is the biggest factor and must stay at the top of our minds,” he said.
