A man was killed instantly when he ran into the spinning propeller of a twin-engined plane on a remote airstrip in Papua New Guinea.

Onlookers watched in horror as the man was decapitated when he ran up to the Islander aircraft as it taxied for take-off from Kabwum airstrip in Morobe Province on Saturday.

District administrator John Orebut said the man, in his mid-50s and married with three children, died instantly.

An agent for the plane's operator, North Coast Aviation, saw the man running towards the plane and shouted for him to stop but it was too late, Orebut said.

The airline sent in another plane with its chief pilot, a police officer and a provincial disaster officer to investigate the incident.

Only three days earlier, a North Coast Aviation pilot suffered a broken jaw when the single-engined Cessna 206 plane he was landing at a remote airstrip in Milne Bay Province crashed off the runway and into a gully.

Australian Gerard Conron, a long time PNG resident, was this week awaiting dental surgery in Alotau Hospital.

Like to see how they handle this one at the safety meeting!

Safety Officer: Meeting opened 4:00pm.

Previous action item: people crowding the planes at airstrips. Wanna take it from here, chief?

GT: Ahhhhhhh, ahhhhhh, ahhhhhhh.....
MT: Mate, on your way home, can you buy me a pack of winfield blue?
BP: cough cough cough (hack) (lung) cough cough....

Safety Officer: right, that's it then? I think we've found a way to proceed here. Meeting closed 4:02pm
