My current machine came with Vista Home Premium Edition already installed.
Now I've encountered a problem (Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. code 39) whereby the CD/DVD drive isn't recognised.
The help-line says that the solution is to reinstall the O/S from the rescue CD, but will this result in loss of all the data (documents and gigabytes of photographs)? - though I DO have a backup on an external HDD.
I realise that I will lose all programmes installed by me (and probably the bundled software too) so this isn't very appealing.
It appears to be a known problem (search on Googoo) and several forums suggest editing the registry to delete the upper and lower filters (I don't understand these terms) and I'm not comfortable attempting this, especially as failure would result in losing access to the internet and any further information.

If you're not comfortable editing the registry, you could simply download a Guided Help tool and follow its instructions. There's one at the first link you posted.
