Is it true that Class I Medical (JAR) now has validity for 1 year for people older than 40 ??

Yes, but only if you are not doing single pilot commercial flying.

Its only "single pilot air transport operations carrying passengers" that requires a renewal every 6 months. For "other commercial operations" e.g. instructing, aerial work and, I presume, carrying freight its once a year until age 60
