American Trans Air Flight Attendants to Hold Candlelight Vigil Friday, December 17 at McCarran Airport; Corporate Greed Violates Spirit of Holiday, Say ATA Attendants

WASHINGTON, Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Flight attendants for American Trans Air say the airline's greed violates the spirit of the holiday season. ATA recently passed the one billion dollar revenue mark December 9, elevating its status in the industry to a major carrier. Despite its success, ATA pays flight attendants poverty level wages.

December 19 is another important date for ATA -- the one-year anniversary of contract talks with its flight attendants, represented by the Association of Flight Attendants, AFL-CIO.

"ATA is a wealthy company. It's a shame that it treats its workers so poorly," said Cathy Haraburdo, president of the Association of Flight Attendants' Council 36. "We helped make this airline a success, now we want our fair share."

A first-year ATA flight attendant earns $14,283.

While some flight attendants struggle to make ends meet, top executives are earning huge bonuses. ATA rewarded its two top executives with more than a million dollars in bonus payments last year.

Currently, talks between AFA and the airline are under the auspices of a federal mediator. If mediated sessions prove to be fruitless, under the Railway Labor Act, AFA could ask to be released from mediation and placed into a 30-day cooling-off period. If no agreement is reached by the end of the 30- day period, the parties are free to engage in "self help," for flight attendants that means CHAOS(TM).

CHAOS(TM) -- Creating Havoc Around Our System -- is a strike action that may take many forms. It may call for a mass walkout for a day or week. Or flight attendants may walk off individual flights.

Approximately 1,400 flight attendants are employed by the airline. All are members of AFA, the world's largest flight attendant union with 47,000 members at 26 airlines. Visit their web site at www.afanet.org (http://www.afanet.org)
