I was wondering can you get your ppl with a class one medical or do you have to get a class 2 then a class one when going for fATPL??

Yes you can, you're class one will do nicely for ppl, but a class too suffices.

If you intend going on to commercial flying get your Class 1 medical as soon as possible, whilst any potential problems have failed to raise their heads.
Once you have the Class 1 medical that's you on renewal limits for the next 10 years so if, for example, your eyesight does deteriorate you don't have to worry about meeting initial standards.
