I know this is on a thread somewhere but I cannot find it. Can somebody explain different levels of progression. Let me know if I am correct on this-

If I were to start as a US frieghter DEFO one would do the 3 year commitment at a US base. Then my understanding is that some are getting the upgrade if they want to stay on the frieghter at around 3 years. However you would be then locked into the frieighter and would be on a scale that tops out at year 11 at 13,380 per month. All things being equal this is the max base salary you could earn during you Cathay Career.

If after your 3 year commitment on the US frieghter you could bid to the passenger fleet. You would then come is as a 4th year FO and have a base monthly salary of 8660 per month. You could either be based in HK or a US base as an FO.

So if you choose to go to HK as an FO on the passenger do you bid any open equipment? Are you locked on that equipment forever or until it is gone? Can you bid vacancies on other equipment after a seat lock? Can you bid back to the US at some point as an FO or Capt? Once you make capt in HK or US can you bid back to the frieghter and stay on that scale?

Anyone know where I can find a copy of the CoS08?

Thanks for any help

"Anyone know where I can find a copy of the CoS08?"

Don't think it's been formally published in detail. For an advanced copy I suggest you email [email protected]

Alternatively, you can make do with the abridged version being;

We will do whatever we  want.

Saif;

First off there are no guarantees here. You get left seat by selection not by seniority. So you could get it right away if you are a star. Have a hick up or personality clash and all bets are off.

Yes 3yrs DEFO then transfer to pax WHEN a FO position is available AND they can afford to let you go to the freighter. That depends on the staffing on the freighter and whether there are a lot of new hires on the integrated FO positions (they will fly all -400 eqip in N. America base)

As for the move to HK you go on the 400 and that is it. They will ask you to fill out a form saying you will accept anything but will not move you on to another type. So it is all a game really. If you decide to wait for a N American basing you may have to wait a long time as they are filling and will remain filled once full for a long time.

If you are hired into a Base on the new unified FO direct entry you will keep your base for as long as it takes to hold command or you move to HK Europe etc. That is looking like it will stretch to 15 or so years if you choose not to go back to HK.

So if you are being hired find out into what position as it will make a lot of difference down the road.

Just my five green cents

Thanks for the info, it is hard to figure out how the system works if you don't know anybody there. I am going for Phase II for DEFO on the US frieghter this week.

Hi Saifair

Make sure you have a good browse around. I recently posted this, Americans: Stuff you should know (http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?t=301981).

If you are up to it then you can take an early freighter command. This would be based in USA and the scale starts at 127,716 p.a. (fm Jan 2008) and tops out at 172,116 after 13 years. You can do this from day one - no lock in.

However as a freighter CN in USA, you will have very few days at home - mostly bouncing around the lower 49. Commuting and hotels will be expensive.

You will be on the following scale as an FO - unified from Jan 08:

73,440
74,904
76,404
93,192
110,604
112,824
115,068
117,372
119,724
122,124

No need to move base or fleet to achieve the 'higher' pay, which kicks in Yrs 3/4.

The new UFO scales are a pay cut. Over 10 years you will earn 48K less than somebody who joins 31 Dec 07.

After 4 years you should have the right to come to HKG - just make sure you bring a gas mask and don't have any kids to educate.

Once you make capt in HK or US can you bid back to the frieghter and stay on that scale?Yes, but you will take the lower freighter pay.

Generally, equipment changes are difficult - up to the company, though opportunities do seem to come up. Like management everywhere, they never seem to get it quite right.

Be sure to ask them how long they think YOU will take to achieve a passenger command. I expect they will not commit and would rather you focus on what today's new Captains achieve. Make sure you do the maths yourself.

Hope that helps

Originally we were liking the idea of taking the kids to HK since they are young and having them learn Chinese and another culture. This is not looking as good as it once did in theory. Thanks very much for the info.

Hi Saifair

No question that culturally it will be broadening for the kids. Is also a relatively safe place.

Just not sure its enough of a trade off given pollution and schools.

....yea, being able to speak cantonese is definately broadening. It will certainly come in handy for your children as they will be able to converse with the nurses at the hospital where they are being treated for their chronic lung and skin diseases....
