I'm thinking about applying for a First Officer job with LH Cargo. But before I do this I need the inside scoop about their operation:

Can one live in an other country than Germany and just position on the first day of duty?
How many days off/on duty in a row does one have?
Do their pilots get ID tickets?
How many block hours does a pilot log?
Are the legs flown expanded crew or just CMD and COP?
And of course: How much is the entry salary?

Any inputs are greatly appreciated!

Hi there, are you talking about LH Cargo or NewCo? LH Cargo is a part of "Konzerntarifvertrag", therfore any application must go thru Carriercenter Bremen.You need to meet all entry requirements for Lufthansa Konzern!

the entry requirements are not a problem. I just wanted to know how the working conditions are. You seem to work for them. Any hints?

Working conditions are almost the same as for Lufthansa German Airlines.
Pay is more or less exactly identical, as well as workingconditions, some minor exceptions like "Freizeitmodell" defere a little. All in all the best you can get in the German Airline Industrie.Go for it, it´s a good place, nice people there, good pay, and after 5 years you have the choice to convert to LH A340, B744 as Fo, or Cpt A320 Germanwings,Cpt Condor B757,so, what are you waiting for?700 Block hours a year,unlimited ID Travel,42 Days annual fully payed leave,excellent Training facilities and personal:).

Hi All!!

Well I have been a lurker for a few years on this site, and finally have a reason to write. But first, I wanted to say thank you to SO many pilots, whose names I have forgotten, who on this site alone have helped me learn so many things about so many airlines... so.. Thank You!!

O.K.. back to me... :} Recently, I have realised that the Regional Carrier I am flying for in the States is just no longer worth my time, effort, blood,
lost sleep, etc. A co-worker mentioned that although LH is ab initio,
LH Cargo is NOT... so as an experienced Turbine pilot, with an FAA license, AND a German wife, it might be an option for me. Does anyone
have the skinny about how they hire/who they hire/should I even bother?

Thank a million, again! The comments on this site helped 2 friends of mine
decide to leave for Emirates and Qatar, and stopped another one from
leaving, as it would not have fit him at all.

Well, first you need to have the right to work and live in Germany/EU,
then you need a JAR FCL ATPL and with all this you apply to Lufthansa on their website www.lufthansa-pilot.de everything is goinig via their Career centre, also LH Cargo.
By the way, you need to be fluent in german.

J_h if you want to go to Europe you will need to get a JAA ATPL. Not particularly easy but many here have done it and can help guide you through it. Your wife should qualify you to work in the EU. There are quite a few carriers looking for expeienced pilots in Europe and check out Netjets Europe, they are hiring also. Are you an Eaglet? Best of luck!

ID Tickets can be purchased online, an e-ticket will be issued.
Some longer flights are operated with one captain, one copilot and one "cruise captain", they are referred to as Senior First Officers in Lufthansa lingo.
It is quite usual for people to commute from other german cities, but be aware that cargo flights often leave and arrive at strange times in the middle of the night.

I heard a yank voice flying LH Cargo just the other day.. (er... night, rather).

Doubt if he speaks Deutsch, but ya never know.

Well, this is from their online application:

Deutsch und Englisch fließend in Wort und Schrift

which means, german and english in speaking and writing.
There may be exeptions, but the standart requirement is, that you at least speak german.

I also think Atlas Air is doing a few flights for LH Cargo, so maybe you did not hear a LH Cargo Crew, just the callsign.

World Airways does, at least did, some flights for Lufthansa Cargo to/from LAX. As they used the Lufthansa Cargo callsign, this might be the case, when you hear or have heared a yank voice using a Lufthansa Cargo callsign.

It's a good job looking from the outside. But it's hard to get in. Beside being elegible for employment in the EU, you need a JAR FCL license, school education equivalent to the German Abitur and you need to fulfill their requirements regarding the German language. All this is managable, but the biggest killer is still their assesment, most fail their and I mean most.

I still think it's worth a try, even if they even wouldn't invite me.:rolleyes:

Gentlemen.
I have been trying on google to find Contacts for LH Cargo.
Would you please advise me where to applyþ
What is the age limit?
Is it a requirement to speak fluent german?
I can just survive in germany on my german.
I already have thousands of widebody time and already fly as a captain.
However I wouldnt mind to start as a F/O with LH.
How long does it under current circumstances to get an opportunity for ?upgrade?

It's only in German, as for all LH parts you have to be fluent in German. You also need the right to work in the EU and fulfill all the other requirements.

LH has been leasing U.S. carriers such as ATLAS and others to fly for them periodically. Im not sure if FOCUS was flying for them as well. However I remember seing them on the ramp in FRA.

Age limit for LH is 37 now, as far as I know LH Cargo has no more age limit.

Mentioning any age limits in an ad for a job can be a violation of anti discrimination law in Germany.

I can't find any age limit for RE pilots at LH anymore mentioned on their webpage, neither for LH nor for LH Cargo, Cityline or Germanwings.

You are right, but try to go against the age limit, I guess it wont give you any advantage.
Anyway, the age limit is still mentioned on the website, 32+364 days, but this has been increased to 36+364days, LH Cargo should not have anymore age limit.

EAM you are right, going against the age limit wouldn't get you persoanlly anywhere, however I checked www.lufthansa-pilot.de under Ready Entries Voraussetzungen (sorry it's only in German:rolleyes: ) so they don't mention the agelimit anymore only for abinitios it's still there. If you still find it there I am blind and, uups you better don't fly with me :\

Well at least on the paper there is no age discrimination.

If you go on page 2 of requirements you will find this:


* Für die LH Passage: Höchstalter 32 Jahre + 364 Tage zum voraussichtlichen Datum des Arbeitsvertrages bzw. ab 33 Jahre mind. 1.000 Std. Flugerfahrung multicrew und multiengine in der kommerziellen Luftfahrt.

But dont worry, I am almost deaf, so we would fit together very good. :}

Klar, kein problem,

LH Cargo and DHL will create a new airline operating out of Leipzig with B777/F starting in april 2009 with a total of 11 A/C by 2014.

Did you expect more infos, where to apply, salary etc well its still about 15 month to go, so a little early for this, even as its still not clear if the first B777/F will be delivered by the end of 2008, with the 787 delay, also the B777/F could be delayed.
Lets wait and see, 11 A/C until 2014, enough time and jobs to see how its going.
