Can any of the Challenger CL 600 or CL 601 make Dublin - Bangor USA with 4 pax / bags on board? (part 91)
I believe the 601 3ER can but the budget is a bit restrictive, but want to make Bangor

Any advice appreciated

Cannot speak about the 600, but the 601 would have not problem with DUB-BGR, probably could make the NY airports and alternates should not be a problem, either. Later models are 3300nm machines, I believe.

Hi there,stay well clear of the 600 it uses the alf 502 engines which are underpowered & a problem engine.
They are used on early 146,s.The only good thing about the 600 is that it has the same cabin as the 601 & its a lot cheaper to buy.
Avionics will be the old steamdriven anologue type, against the partial efis on most of the 601,s out there.
Go for the later 601-3 if you can ,it will have the tail tank as standard.Most 601-1a,s will not have a tail tank except a few that have had it fitted as an option/mod.
You should easily be able to fly to bangor from Ireland in a 601 with a tail tank.
Also make sure aircraft you buy is on smart parts & engines are on JSSI Program.
Lastly employ a good engineer to look afer it for you.:)

is there anyone who has done this trip in the past, how much reserve, with how many pax etc

can the 1A with extra tail tank do it easy or does one have to go for the 3A

We did Glasgow-Bangor in a 601-3A/ER in August of last year. 5 Pax 2 Crew I believe it was 5+15 enroute landed Bangor with 3000lbs- weather Bangor VMC.

have you operated the 601 1A with the tail tank, (or any other forum members?) maybe you could PM me some more details on same, the 3A is a bit expensive for us, but we will buy a 1A with tail tank if we are sure of making it, otherwise we will wait a while

Hi flying68 yes i have operated a 601-1a with a tail tank,basically it gives you the climb to cruise.601,s will burn roughly 3000lbs in the first hour.
Gama operate a 601-1a with a tail tank, you can,t miss it it is painted in the oakley sunglasses paint scheme.The owner has a great sense of humour!!!Be very carefull if your buying a 601 on a budget, there are many undermaintained ones out there, that have been abused.Get a good engineer to look at it or get a pre buy done by Ruag in Germany.Pm me if you need any more,

Just for reference, was told by the ex-Chief Pilot of TAG when we were testing updated 600s for Canadian DND that "if you had a good tech who could keep the cowlings in alignment", then the 600 was a genuine 2,500NM aircraft. He also said the main problem with the Lycomings was that you needed to anticipate more with them as they don't accept rough engine handling like to CF34s do. Beleive latest 604s & 605s have ranges of just over 4000NM.

does anyone have performance / range figures that we can work out exactly how much headwind we can take or not etc, in order to see the difference in between the 600 with tail tank and the 601-1a with tail tank on a dublin to bangor trip
