Flying in Hobart

Hey guys,

Heading down to Australia's most beautiful city :p in a few weeks and was after some advice regarding general flying around Hobart.

I don't have access to a VTC yet so havent checked much, but would be looking at a 172 for a short scenic down/up the river and general suburbs.

After info on the sort of airspace / procedures / tips / good place to hire etc

Try Tasair at Hobart Airport. They are a great lot of people and their 172 are in good shape. Get checked out to Darlington on Maria Island and also do a scenic down the Tasman Peninsula, across to Bruny Island and over Hobart. A very nice part of the world.:ok:

When I was last there you could hire a Chipmunk at the Aero Club at Cambridge for £4/10/0 per hour. May have changed a little since?

I can’t recommend Tasair. I found them to be an uncaring bunch, plus the C172 I hired was tatty and had an intermittent ASI fault.

The Aero Club of Southern Tasmania are a good bunch though.

To answer a few more of your questions, Hobart has Class D (procedural) airspace, so assuming you only have a PPL, check your licence restrictions.

If you hire from the Aero Club, you will fly out of Cambridge, over the road from the main airport. This can get a bit interesting, but nothing a good read of the ERSA can't prepare you for.

If your keen on doing a city scenic, the western shore suburbs and Mt Wellington are OCTA so you should have some flexibility.

Listen to the advice that wicked shimmy has about Tas Air. From my experience they are willing to take your money and that is about all you will get out of them. :E I once flew one of their aircraft and have had problems with their radios and flight instruments. Try the aeroclub for some good advice on recreational flying and spend the $10 on a VTC you will need it if you are not very familiar with the local area.

Thanks guys, some good advice as usual. Don't have any airspace restrictions on my PPL and have flown into Maroochydore Class D a few times, so shouldnt be a problem.

I thought Cambridge as closed? Looked like it when I last drove past there.

Well it is still open for now but like many of these aerodromes around Australia they are cashing in with developers retail projects hence all the construction around there.
