View Full Version : Pa28 To Sr20 ?

Hi All,

Due to moving residence, I am looking at a new flying school in SE QLD.(currently at YRED).

Have circa 100 hrs total in a PA28 and been looking at Sunland aviation at Archerfield.

They have suggested to finish off my commercial training in a SR20.

Just wondering if any one had any feedback on moving from PA28 or 172 across to the SR20. (besides the obvious increased cost)

I'd jump at the chance. I wish there were a Cirrus of any kind for hire in Sydney. I did some training for the one Whitworth had on line, but it's no longer with us and won't be replaced.

Finishing your CPL in a SR20 has very good points and very bad points. Sunland is run by Steve Maltby, who is also the Cirrus sales rep for Australia, so they will have nothing but good things to say about the SR20. Getting independent opinion is a good idea.

If the SR20 has a glass cockpit it will get you used to using systems and give you an understanding of how they all work together; GPS, Autopilot, MFD and PFD all exchange information. The SR20 will also teach you the importance of keeping your speed on final. You can't cut the power and drift them in. The very high wing loading means you have to fly them all the way down to the flare; like the larger planes you will be flying as a CPL.

You say this will be to finish off your CPL? I presume then that you already have been flying a CSU aircraft and have the endorsement? The SR20 has a power lever rather than throttle and prop controls, so you won't get the experience of operating the power and pitch independently of each other. It is true that the SR20 is acceptable as a CPL trainer by CASA. but what about potential employers?

I suggest the SR20 is a good option, but if you don't have a CSU ticket you will need to get one on another aeroplane.

Shouldn't be a problem... it flies like any other plane, albeit a bit faster. The hard part is getting used to all the systems. As Walrus said, it's a good idea (a necessity I would say) to have Manual CSU and Retractable Gear on your licence, so by all means go for the Cirrus, but try and do some time in an Arrow or similar if you can. If not, you can do your CSU, Retract, and Multi Engine all at the one time in a twin eg. duchess, but you really need to have the CSU and Gear to be employable.:ok:

Oh? They told me VH-HYY wasn't going to be replaced. Maybe things have changed.I could certainly be wrong, however on my way past the tower the other day I noticed one parked next to VH-JWW in their flight line. Perhaps it was only a day visit.

I thought it was fantastic though that they had an aircraft like this for hire, would be a shame if this one experience puts them and others off offering these aircraft for hire in the future.

I would like to report that the SR20 was an absolutely fantastic machine to fly! a lot to absorb in regard to systems and avionics, but the stick and rudder feel is fantastic :) Got to love the 200 horses up front also :}

I had the same feeling as i did when i finshed my first lesson ! :ok:

Don't get me started on said individual!

Needless to say that Columbia must be doing well at the moment !

The SR20 is nice, but limited in usable load and needs a few more horses to reach it's alleged TAS figures. Ok for training and a couple of pax, but again as with many other aircraft, not a real 4 seater.

G'Day All,

I've resurrected this thread in search of a Cirrus for hire. Anyone know if there's one (any model) for hire in the Sydney area? I heard there was one at YSBK which came to grief some time back...

Not looking for licence training... just an endorsement and some weekend trips.

Actually, SM has nothing to do with the training, advice or choice of aircraft you wish to fly at Sunland. You will find professional, friendly and always helpful advice tailored to your individual needs.

Well thats what I found doing my CPL there. You will need to have a CSU rating for your CPL, that cannot be done on the Cirrus but you can do the CPL training and test in it. Fantastic aircraft.

And as for experience pushing and pulling throttle and pitch levers, you can get plenty of that in the seneca, later on.:ok:
