Hi all

I am starting with Cabair in Jan, and shall be leaving my current employer (British Airways) in Dec. Does anyone know of any financial assistance from the government that I may be entitled to as I am going back to full time education?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Also drop me a line if you are on the course starting Jan 4th

Cheers!

Check out the Career Devevelopment Loans on Google to see if you are eligible. Essentially they are a deferred loan product offered by 3 banks up to 8k with the interest paid by the government during your training. You will DEFINETELY want to refinance the loan once your training is finished though as the rates are poor.

Cabair would be considered more an FTO as opposed to a University, so although you're there full time studying to become a pilot the government will see it as training from a training provider meaning you'll get diddly squat from Mr Brown.

CDL (Career Development Loan) on the other hand should be available to you from the government.

You can borrow between £300 and £8,000 and you agree with the bank how long you'll take to pay it back. The amount you're entitled to is 80% of course fees, expenses including childcare, and living costs for full time students. If you've been unemployed for at least three months you can apply for 100% of your course fees.

Only three banks – Royal Bank of (http://www.rbs.co.uk/Personal_Finances/Loans/Career_Development_Loans/default.htm)Scotland (http://www.rbs.co.uk/Personal_Finances/Loans/Career_Development_Loans/default.htm), Barclays (http://www.personal.barclays.co.uk/BRC1/jsp/brccontrol?site=pfs&task=homefreegroup&value=11607) and Co-op (http://www.cooperativebank.co.uk/servlet/Satellite?cid=1096271431358&pagename=CoopBank%2FPage%2FtplPageStandard&c=Page) offer the genuine article!

As said above, when the CDL is about to kick in pay it off with a loan from another bank with a lower APR on a term that suits you.

Yes, I took a year's career break from work and classed myself as a student. I went off and studied my ATPL's FT and then did my cpl/ir. My local council had no issue with this.
