I am new here. I just found this web through Google. Can anyone help telling me the +/- of working for HKATC? I just got an offer, tempting to take the challenge but unsure!

The job itself is not bad but the management is extremely poor. Moreover, if you join now, you will be standing behind 40+ SATCO that have joined ahead of you. You will have to wait for 3 to 4 years before you will be able to start your training as a controller. If you are contended with surviving doing nothing but ATFSO's work for the first few years on a meager pay, just go ahead and sign up for the job. Some people would like to convince you into believing that you are joining a profession. Years of mis-management has turn this into a piece of joke.

There are winners and losers in every profession, the winners move on, the losers stay behind and blame their lack of aptitude/efforts on everyone else but themselves. Check through this site and you will see plenty of one sided opinion when nothing management does is ever right and are all targetted to give them a hard time. Where I work I sit next to some very capable people who have a balanced view of the company we work for and some who have nothing but grudges. Look at the big picture, speak to and ask questions from real people and evaluate yourself.

Well Im not sure what Company you work for valeriey, but my colleage and I work for Civil Service who has decided we don't need any more controller (sorry, less than half the controller CAD ask for) and dont want to spend any of the revenue we bring in to Goverment (sorry again, yes they spend it on new computer for 4th floor, coffee machine for boses, plazma screens to give pretty presentation to visitor).
How long will it take them to see what is happening in other ATC around the world?
Small Potato- I think you would be very frustrated with the career here in HK - there is no career. You will be treated like  and get paid less and less. Nobody in Goverment thinks you are worth anything until you  up.

Not quite. If your face fit, you have the right image and you are a yes man, you will have a career. All other factors don't count.

Once upon a time, a so call general manager thought it was a good idea to have more females in the system. Lo and behold, more than half of the staffs here now wear skirts( none of them being Scottish though). Then came the biggest CAD scientific discovery of the century: female can get PREGNANT.
In order to stamp the loss of working hours due to women on maternity leave, our beloved brother 4 (a.k.a valeriey) gave out orders to hire more males on the ongoing recruitment exercise.
So if you are a female, I congratulate you for getting an offer to be a SATCO. However, if you are a male, your offer is probably tainted as more eligible females are turned away by our affirmative action committee in order to fulfill the wish of brother 4. You will have a hard time proving yourself otherwise in the years ahead.
N.B. the fictional characters above are not reflection of their real life counterparts. Any resemblance is deeply regretted.

With the gulf states serco controllers being awarded a 70%...yes70% increase there will be many extra vacancies in the system very very soon and what with all the planned expansion you could expect rapid promotion very quickly.

But...it will come at a price....if you know what I mean.

Anyway good luck with your decision.....almost finnished my contract and looking forward to cleaner sand filled air soon.

No wonder on the other thread, this valeriey person said there should be a better person for chief of ops, because he want to be on that chair!:=
