HDTV in Hong Kong?

Are there any HDTV service providers yet in Hong Kong? If so, which is the best in terms of channel linup and quality? Also, who is the best internet service provider?

Only NOW TV, and only in very selected areas, and only the football and one other channel.

Terrestrial digital/HDTV from the incumbent terrestrial operators (ATV & TVB) will start within the next year.

Well no, not really. The problem (for broadcast TV) has been that the HK regulators have been waiting for the Chinese to decide what Digital TV standard to go with.

Personally I'm very happy with the service I get from HSBC and PCCW. But maybe I'm just easily pleased. I used to be happy with the service I got from CX when I first came here, but now the combination of new products that really don't work for me (specifically the new long haul J) and prices that have gone up as fast as the quality has gone down mean it's now a long way from being my automatic choice.

I was so disapointed to find out that this high-tech city has such sucky TV.

-The TV comes from the phone line, so the picture quality is horrendous. Its like watching videos on Youtube, that is the only thing I can compare it to.
Which also means that the bigger your screen, the crappyer it looks.

-The channels suck. If you showed HK HBO to an HBO executive in the states he would barf. The movies are really old and they are edited. It is a really weird editing though, not just for skin. Curse-words are edited and they don't have the cutting-edge programming you get from state-side HBO.

-This means that the internet is also squite slow. Somewhere between Dial-up and DSL in the states. You won't get cable-modem speeds because coax does not exist here, so cable and cable modem don't exist either! :yuk:

Hopefuly HK will join the 21st century some time before the 22nd. Yai communism... :ugh:

You are in a bad area I think. I have just tested my internet speeds and got 2.43 Mbps download and 632 kbps upload - that's MUCH better than I get in Aus. The upload speeds are especially good here.

Just for information today is slow too - I have had almost T2 download speed here - and that is ripping!

Don't know if you use it but http://www.internetfrog.com gives a good speed tester.

On the TV side I used to have CableTV - which was not great, but my Now TV picture quality is pretty good. Perhaps that's because every time they ring me I add another channel. Never could say no, and why do I need the Indian language movies?!

I don't know about you, but in the US (big cities like NY and LA) 100/MBPS is the standard via coax cable. So yeah, 6mbps seems rather slow when compared to that.

You need to get that looked at. It should be more or less DVD quality.

I see lots of dithering and scratchy edges on all channels. I know it isn't my system because it is the same at my friends places and at the TV stores. Why do you think all Electronic stores use DVD feeds to display their TVs? If they used the regular cable signal people would think the TVs themself suck!

Not to mention that in order to display the guide you need about 15 seconds each time. It also gets very convoluted when the days switch over.

I'm not wanting to get into a pissing match my friend. I'm sure the TV and Internet have advanced lots in the past few years. I'm simply saying that if you are coming from NA you will be very dissapointed. Its kind of like going from High speed internet to dial up, it is very hard to go back in technology.:O

Netvigator consistently gives me 3.5 megabits so me thinks that your 100 megabits in NY is a bit optimistic . Plus my now broadband quality is fantastic , true it isn't true HDTV but very acceptable .

The speed of connection to the gateway router is only one factor, and rarely the one that limits your useful download speed. When I say I get 6MBps on Netvigator I mean download speeds from random servers in other countries.

If you're simply impressed by big numbers then HKBN will sell you a 1Gbps connection. But you won't get data from other countries much faster than anyone else.
