How do you expect anybody to re-recognise something that has never been "de-recognised"?
It is still officially Battle of Britain Day, it was 67 years ago, what more do you want?

I just cannot see the point when the real point is that the 15th September IS the recognised BoB day. Always was and always will be. What can Brown do that is not already done?
This is a subject close to my heart and I am prepared to be enlightened.

Well, perhaps if it means that everyone who has worn the light blue suit would have an official day off. ;)
15 September has always been BoB Day during my lifetime and who gives a stuff what Gordon thinks about it, anyway?

How many kids do you know that can accurately name the date if Battle of Britain Day?
We must never forget "The Few" that is all I am asking.
History must not be glossed over for the sake of political correctness!
National re-recogition of BoB Day would be fantastic.
Only aviation minded people have any idea that September 15 is BoB Day.
Didn't Mr Brown say he wanted a "British Day" recently?
Sounds like September 15th would be ideal for that...best of luck with the petition.:ok:

We can't celebrate Trafalgar Day as that would upset the French and Spanish, so we couldn't celebrate BoB day either as that would upset the damn Boche!:\

To all "knockers" of the petition!
Right then, let's attempt to clarify the issue.
Sept 15th has become forgotten about tahnks to political correctness and the "don't mention the war brigade" (good old Basil Fawlty!)
All I want is for the Government to give BoB Day the recognition it deserves in calendars and diaries etc. It will not be on the same scale as Remembrance Day but The Few should never be forgotten.
Oh and a message to Blacksheep, please do not have a sly dig at The Royal Air Force. You would not be here if it wasn't for them.

Got to agree with Honour The Few. This year although I was a bit distracted by the Vulcan project, I cannot remember hearing much about the BoB on the TV etc. I am all for entente cordial and that, but it does seem that important dates are being forgotten( officially ignored??) for the sake of not offending our Euro masters. Some things should never be forgotten and if BoB Day is not annually called to mind then the reasons for it happening will be forgotten and the lessons of history will be ignored. Anyway if the annual reminder upsets some europrat, Good!! If it makes them squirm with guilt, also good!! Those who seek to make the past PC by letting it fade away from the public conscience are most likely to turn a blind eye when it happens again! Politicians?? Pah!!:*

Don't worry, the Boche were in the First World War - BoB Day was a battle with the Nazis in the second one. As the Nazis 'don't exist' anymore and don't have any particular nationality :E there is no problem with BoB Day offending anyone, as surely EVERYONE benefitted from the RAF's magnificent efforts to ensure that democracy and freedom of speech would prevail. :ok:

Ah yes, but that was a one off. And for the re-enactment the two fleets were not British v French/Spanish but Red v Blue (or the other way round, Blue v Red, or .... Oh, I forget!)

"The Few" will NEVER be forgotten. They are etched forever in minds that remember and books by the hundreds. At my last contact with the Battle of Britain Fighter Pilot's Association in February there was just 123 of these brave gentlemen left. I suspect it will have dropped since then but the fact remains that BoB day will go on.
As for BoB days, celebrations are somewhat limited these days because of a dwindling Air Force and the high cost of displays.
Though I admire your reasons for a petition I would suggest you are aiming at the wrong 'market' and your time scale is very short.
As a matter of fact I do stay in touch with one or two of the BoB pilots and they do say that nothing will change and they do now have worthy memorials, especially the one on the embankment in London, which is always attended by many many people from all over the world.
Their names will liveth forevermore.

I wish we could be sure that the courage and sacrifice of the WW2 generation won't be forgotten...
We as individuals won't forget them of course, but that's a drop in the ocean compared with this nation's overall viewpoint. When it comes to remembering the sacrifices previous generations made in battles that we as a nation must remember, I don't believe we in Britian are anywhere near as good as many other countries.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course (that's what they were fighting for) but I think it's a sad day when even aviation minded people believe that this kind of thing is a waste of time and 'give up' without taking the time to even sign a petition. Hardly the spirit of 1940...
I know the chaps from the BoBHS had plenty of mountains to climb when trying to get the Embankment monument set up. It was a long hard struggle for them but they kept on going and achieved their goal eventually.
Keep going HTF, you probably won't win this time around, but from little acorns...

No problem with comemorating BoB day with a public holiday...
... but if it were to happen, then lets have it on the day, not the nearest convenient Monday - which devalues the whole point of having the holiday, and whilst we're about it make it "proper" holiday by closing Supermarkets, Garden Centes, DIY stores etc etc.
We should perhaps to the same with the 11th November - as I believe the French and Belgians do.
Sounds like a great idea ATN...Let's make it a bank holiday and call it British Day as the 15th represents (to aviation-minded people) a time when Britain and the few fighting with her at the time actually did something great for the future generations of countless other nations as well as ourselves.
But how on earth can we achieve it??
